Parents in Nigeria are wondering whether the government can keep their schoolgirls safe

On April 14, 2014 Boko Haram gunmen seize 276 girls aged 12 to 17 from the Government Girls Secondary School in the remote town of Chibok in Borno state.

Buhari urged the parents to keep their hopes alive on the return of their daughters, saying the recovery of more than 100 of the girls through the government's determined effort should give confidence.

The relentless onslaughts show not even children and schools are spared from Boko Haram's wrath - rather, they are the targets.

The Chibok ceremony, which included Christian and Muslim prayers, was one of a number of vigils and protests to mark the four-year anniversary of the abduction across Nigeria.

The Speaker in a statement issued by his Special Adviser (Media & Public Affairs) said, "It is unfortunate that four years after, all of our daughters have still not been accounted for. Because, government resists independent reporting of the crisis, most of the reports are choreographed and Nigerians are also not ready to hear the truth or stand by it".

Groups, parents of the chibok girls are using this occasion to call for the immediate release of the girls, also not forgetting the remaining Dapchi schoolgirl, Leah Sharibu who is also still held in captivity by the Boko Haram.

In May 2016 the Nigerian army confirms the first of the schoolgirls has been found.

Journalist Ahmad Salkida who regularly reports on the Boko Haram insurgents has shared more details on the Chibok Girls, 4 years after their abduction.

Islamist fighters from Nigeria's Boko Haram group have abducted more than 1,000 children in the northeast since 2013, the United Nations children's agency UNICEF said on Friday.

One hundred and seven were returned in mid-March. Don't give up hope of seeing our daughters back home again.

"The secrecy around the condition of the Chibok Girls and most recent Dapchi Girls debacle by those involved is the reason people like me are out of the picture".

Buhari however admitted that they may be some delay in securing their release following setbacks in talks with the terrorists.

Boko Haram has used kidnapping as a weapon of war during the conflict, seizing women and girls to act as sex slaves or suicide bombers, and men and boys to fight.

Since Boko Haram launched its insurgency in the northeast region nine years ago, at least 2,295 teachers have been killed and over 1,400 schools have been destroyed.

"The time is long overdue for the government to deliver meaningful action on behalf of all the victims of Boko Haram's crimes".
