Taliban Kill a Governor and Overrun a Government Compound

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for a blistering attack on a government compound in Afghanistan's central province of Ghazni that killed at least 15 members of the security forces.

Quoting provincial police statement, the report said that the incident happened at about 2:00 am local time after Taliban insurgents attacked the district governor's compound and police check posts.

Abdul Shukoor Qudusi says the driver was wounded in the explosion late Wednesday night, which set several shops in the area on fire.

Six police also died and 10 intelligence officers were wounded in the attack on the Khwaja Omari district headquarters in the southeastern province of Ghazni, the provincial governor's spokesman Aref Noori told AFP.

A United Nations report showed on Thursday that ordinary Afghans are increasingly in the crosshairs of militants, with the number of civilians killed or wounded in attacks deliberately targeting them more than doubling in the first quarter.

Most civilians were killed by insurgents, and fewer people were killed by pro-government security forces than previously, said the United Nations quarterly report.

He added that Mr Pompeo had been "very smart" about preparing for the job and seeking to reassure the "neglected" rank and file. That's not to say that questions about Mueller are entirely irrelevant to Pompeo , however.

"Afghan civilians continue to suffer, caught in the conflict, in ways that are preventable; this must stop now", said Ingrid Hayden, the Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan.

President Ashraf Ghani condemned the attack and said it was carried out by "Afghanistan's enemy", a reference to the Taliban. Fifteen security forces were killed.

The Taliban on Thursday afternoon had stormed a government chemical in a middle province, tripping an hours-long gunbattle that murdered 1-5, comprising three top rated officials.

"In the attack, three mujahideen were martyred and four others were wounded".

Around 45 insurgents were also killed and several others wounded, he said, adding: "Taliban have set alight the district office complex, but reinforcement arrived at the district and now the situation under control".
