It could be the vital evidence the immigrants need to prove citizenship after it emerged the Home Office destroyed its archive of landing slips in 2009.

They have been dubbed the "Windrush generation" after the Empire Windrush, a cruise liner that brought in one of the first groups of West Indian migrants after the war.

The United Kingdom's Home Office destroyed thousands of landing card slips and other documentation, which registered the arrival dates of immigrants from Windrush Generation to the country, despite warnings that the move would make hard to check the records of Caribbean-born residents experiencing difficulties with there residential status.

Neither the Home Office nor the prime minister have yet said what they're going to do to put things right.

He says: "It was a shock because I have always thought I was legal, I was British".

But Diane Abbott said the government was "wrong to dismiss the importance of the landing cards" as many Windrush cases turned on when someone entered the country "and the fact that they were just thrown away shows the Home Office doesn't have a care for Commonwealth migrants". I have been here from when I was eight. I want to be absolutely clear that we have no intention of asking anyone to leave who has the right to remain here.

'My children are still in London but I am left here.

On Friday morning, Lucy Moreton, general secretary of the ISU, the union for borders, immigration and customs staff, said "knee-jerk" decision by May to restrict the discretion of border staff to decide not to deport people sowed the seeds of the Windrush scandal.

"It is not a new situation. She has information about who was deported and who was in detention and she needs to make that information public", she told Today. What of the ruined lives?

According to an exclusive published by The Guardian, a former Home Office employee who has asked for anonymity, said the decision to destroy the disembarkation cards, which dated back to the 1950s and 60s, was made in 2010 and occurred at a time when the Home Office's Whitgift Centre in Croydon was closed and moved to another location.

But conformation by the National Archives that it holds details compiled by the Board of Trade of arrivals into the United Kingdom, including name, birth date, and journey taken, will add to the weight of evidence being presented by Windrush migrants for their right to remain.

"After the Windrush scandal, we want to be sure that the same is not happening to our European citizens", he told the European Parliament.
