Last week, the president announced military action against Syria in response to the reported chemical attack.

The OPCW inspectors should do their work in the Syrian city of Douma without external pressure; Russian Federation will insist that they visit every location concerning the alleged chemical attack in Syria, Lavrov added.

Worldwide inspectors from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Damascus nearly a week ago but are still waiting to visit the site of the suspected attack.

The United States, along with Britain and France, launched joint airstrikes on military targets in Syria on April 14 for the Bashar al-Assad government's alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma, the last rebel-held town in Eastern Ghouta near the Syrian capital, earlier this month.

But following US-led airstrikes on Syrian regime chemical weapons infrastructure, Russian Federation considered the possibility to "return to examination of this issue not only in regard to Syria but to other countries as well", he stated. "And the results show that they did not cross these red lines". It is likely the line was used in the run-up to the weekend's attacks, but for the two sides to be discussing the acceptability of specific targets would be unusual. The Pentagon said Syrian batteries fired 40 interceptor missiles, most only after the strikes had finished.

Earlier in the day, Kommersant newspaper reported that Russian Federation may supply its S-300 long range surface-to-air missile systems to Syria on a free-of-charge basis, within the framework of military assistance to the Arab country.

"Now we have no such moral obligation", he remarked. We had the moral obligations, we had promised not to do it some 10 years ago, I think, upon the request of our known partners.

He continued, "We took into consideration their claim that this could destabilise the situation".

The Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, has stated that the issue of Russia's supplies of S-300 air defense systems hasn't been decided upon yet. "Now we don't have this moral obligation any longer".

Lavrov also said that he was confident that neither the United States or Russian Federation would allow for tensions between the nations to reach any armed conflict.

"They are the leaders who were elected by their peoples and they are responsible for peace and calm".
