The verdict was pronounced by Judge Madhusudan Sharma inside the Jodhpur Jail due to security reasons.

Asaram has denied the charges and he plans to appeal, according to a special notice on his organization's website.

While Asaram was arrested in September 2013 in connection with the Jodhpur rape case, his son Sai was arrested in December 2013 over the complaint lodged by the sisters.

Police forces in several parts of North and Western India are on high alert, fearing riots in light of the judgment.

Final arguments in the Asaram case were completed on April 7, 2018, and the court had kept the order reserved for April 25.

Talking to reporters outside his house in Shahjahanpur in uttar Pradesh, the victim's father welcomed the court verdict and said "their struggles and ordeal during the period they were seeking justice tested their grit but they had full faith in the judicial system".

Previous to the decision, Asaram's spokesperson rejected solutions that the guru's followers had been planning to protest a possible responsible verdict. "We've full respect for the courts".
