Jeremy Corbyn tells Amber Rudd to resign for 'hardening cruel' Windrush policy

The Windrush scandal dominated proceedings in Westminster today, with Home Secretary Amber Rudd coming under more pressure to resign.

Responding to questions from MPs about the so-called "Windrush" scandal, in which migrants who arrived in the United Kingdom decades ago were denied medical treatment or jobs following demands for paperwork they could not provide, she said that preventing unjustified deportations was her priority.

Long-term residents who arrived in the decades after the Second World War have had their immigration status challenged despite being in the country legally.

Instead it fell to one of the leader's of Labour's "shadow shadow" cabinet, the forensic Home Affairs Committee chair Ms Cooper, to take the Prime Minister to task.

"I don't think that's got anything to do with it", the she said.

'I didn't see it as a systemic issue until very recently'.

Emphasising that those affected by the Windrush affair were in the country legally, Ms Rudd, who said she preferred the phrase "compliant environment", insisted there is "nothing wrong" in trying to remove people who were here unlawfully.

May repeatedly declined to concede any connection, saying the plight of the Windrush community had been created purely because some were not given documentary evidence of their right to remain in the United Kingdom when they arrived decades before.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffers suspected knee problem
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp fears Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set for a long injury layoff. Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said the England international's season looked to be over.

She acknowledged that she had asked for more removals of individuals with no right to be in the United Kingdom to take place, but was not familiar with suggestions that regional targets were in place.

The revelations have prompted fresh criticism of the Government's "hostile environment" policy to tackle illegal immigration.

She also denied that individuals were targeted for deportation.

"Over the years, there have been individual cases of people who have had to regularise their documentation and have done so".

She acknowledged that she had asked for more removals of individuals with no right to be in the United Kingdom to take place, but was not familiar with suggestions that regional targets were in place.

"But for governments of every colour, including that in which the Rt Hon Lady served, action has been taken against illegal immigrants. We remain vigilant on the issue such that our Mission in the United Kingdom, with whom the Ministry is in regular communication, are monitoring and maintaining contact with the Home Office on the issue", added Johnson Smith.

"These policies swept up British citizens and legal migrants causing them huge suffering, as she was warned", he told MPs.
