Central American 'migrant caravan' reaches US-Mexico border

Mr. Trump has said that overly permissive laws have drawn a flood of migrants to the nation's borders.

That is not what the caravan participants say they plan to do.

She said volunteers will also be positioned to the USA side ready to "welcome" people and even offer up their homes to asylum seekers.

What's the problem with migrants seeking asylum?

Hundreds of Central American migrants from a caravan that crossed Mexico reunited in Tijuana on Wednesday and planned to cross the border together this weekend in defiance of threats by U.S. President Donald Trump to repel them.

The effort was organized by Pueblos Sin Fronteras, translated from Spanish as People Without Borders, which is not the same group as the Washington-based non-profit that provides computer classes to global residents of the District of Columbia. Asylum seekers are screened and have their backgrounds checked and, depending on how they entered the country, may be detained pending a hearing.

Some of the migrants, mostly from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, escaped their countries because of gang violence and death threats.

"Both U.S. law and a United Nations treaty on the rights of refugees require that asylum-seekers get a fair hearing", Guerrero notes.

President Trump has been highly critical of the group's travel this year and the Secretary of Homeland Security has warned that anyone who enters the United States illegally will be referred for prosecution.

Oil Prices Continues Gain As Brent Crude Hits $74.2 Per Barrel
Concerns that the USA may reimpose sanctions on Iran helped underpin the markets as this represents a threat to supply. Soaring US output has made WTI crude about $6 a barrel cheaper than Brent and drawn exports to record highs.

Turning away someone seeking asylum without considering his claim violates national and worldwide law.

The AP said U.S. Customs and Border Protection has room to hold about 300 people at the crossing.

Q:Is this caravan something new? At its peak, more than 1,000 people were walking north through Mexico.

With Trump's immigration crackdown and the presence of National Guard troops at the border, Rocketto said she expected a "huge presence of anti-immigration forces". But the smaller group did not disband and has begun arriving on buses at the border city of Tijuana. Most Central American migrants seeking asylum in the USA cite the threat of gang violence in their homelands.

Central American asylum seekers ride a bus to Tijuana on April 25. Numerous people traveling with the caravan are Hondurans seeking to escape the instability and violence that has followed in the wake of President Juan Orlando Hernández's contested re-election past year.

USA officials have repeatedly warned the migrants and their smugglers against attempting to enter the country illegally, or they'll face prosecution.

Still, most planned to press on with their asylum cases.

The immigrants' arrival comes the day after a third federal judge dealt a blow to the Trump administration's efforts to end protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. But Trump has made the issue a top and contentious priority, framing it as a dire security concern and using language far more volatile than his predecessors.
