The military plane that crashed near Savannah Wednesday - killing nine people - was a C-130 Hercules from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard.

Adjutant General Isabelo Rivera says the aging C-130 Hercules had been used to rescue and resupply US citizens after last year's hurricanes, among many other missions.

Roads in the surrounding area have been closed and there are significant delays to flights at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

Washington D.C. [USA], May 3: The United States military officials on Wednesday confirmed that nine personnel were aboard the military plane that crashed near Savannah in Georgia state.

The Puerto Rico Air National Guard WC-130 was flying from Savannah, Georgia, to Tucson, Arizona, where it was to be decommissioned.

It said the C-130 plane was from the Puerto Rico Air National Guard.

President Trump tweeted that he had been briefed on the crash and asked for "thoughts and prayers for the victims, their families and the great men and women of the National Guard".

"We don't know the cause of the crash", said Maj.

He said he could not say how many people in total were on the plane when it crashed.

Motorist Mark Jones told the Savannah Morning News that he saw the plane hit the road right in front of him, and explode in a huge fireball.

Senior Master Sgt. Roger Parsons told reporters authorities are still working to make the crash site safe for investigators to come in.

"This pains us", Rivera said of the deaths.

Authorities said they are working to notify the family members of the deceased service members.

The C-130 did not appear to have hit any vehicles upon impact, said Gena Bilbo, a spokeswoman for the Effingham County Sheriff's Office, another nearby law enforcement agency that responded to the wreck.

The plane was in the air for about two miles before it crashed into a field about a quarter mile from a busy highway.

Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport said on social media that some flights were being affected though the crash happened off its property.

All C-130's were built at the Cobb County facility.

According to the Air National Guard, a board of officers will investigate the accident.

The union reported the crash happened in the Savannah suburb of Port Wentworth.

The Hercules C-130J aircraft went down about 11:30am.

"While we are waiting for more information regarding this unfortunate accident, my thoughts and those of Beatriz are with the families of the crew", said Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló Nevares in a press release.

Mariah Majors, an employee at the Carey Hilliard's on Highway 21, said she could see smoke in the air but could not see the plane. It can be outfitted for transport, reconnaissance, search and rescue, research, refueling, patrol or as a gunship.
