The oak had originally sprouted at the site of the World War I Battle of Belleau Wood in northern France, where about 2,000 USA troops died fighting the Germans in 1918, and Macron wanted his counterpart to have the sapling on the occasion of his state dinner.

Last week, photographs circulated showing US President Donald Trump and France's Emmanuel Macron, a close ally, shoveling dirt over a young sapling as their wives looked on.

The gift was something of a double troll for Macron.

The more mischievous may have even considered the comment to possibly be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Donald Trump's visit to Paris past year, when he was caught telling Mr Macron's wife Brigitte that she was "in such great shape", before looking to her husband and saying "Beautiful".

An answer has finally emerged: The young tree, which had a plastic bag around its roots when it was planted, was removed prophylactically because of concerns about disease.

However, by April 27, the tree had disappeared and been replaced by a discolored patch of grass.

Having just left Washington and talks with the USA president - where he described U.S. policy inconsistencies as "insane" - Macron said he did not know which way Trump would go on the deal.

In fact over in Malaysia , a law was passed where it made the dissemination of fake news illegal where they could be sent to jail and/or fined.

But French ambassador to the US Gérard Araud tweeted the oak was removed due to U.S. quarantine rules, promising it would be replanted later. Almost 2,000 US troops died in that battle, including more than 1,000 Marines.

According to the BBC, the specific location where the tree was taken from in northern France saw the deaths of over 2,000 United States Marines during the First World War.

French leader Emmanuel Macron reinforced Wednesday his commitment to the Iran nuclear deal, saying no one wants an escalation of tensions in the region while admitting the accord needed strengthening.

An official in Macron's office told the Associated Press Monday that Trump insisted on holding a symbolic planting ceremony alongside Macron despite the quarantine requirement.

The White House has not yet responded to media requests regarding the whereabouts and well-being of the tree.

Reuters reported that the tree grew near the "Devil Dog" fountain. If nothing else, this is another demonstration of how the White House Communications Office doesn't seem to be on top of the game.
