UKIP had a good night the last time the seats were contested, in 2014, when the vote coincided with European elections, which it topped.

Despite retaining overall control, the Conservatives lost individual seats in Westminster and Wandsworth.

The Conservative leader of Amber Valley Borough Council has hailed his party's election victory.

Daily Star Online earlier reported the councils to watch for possible Conservative gains include Portsmouth, Basildon, Thurrock, Peterborough and Colchester, all of which could see the party win overall control on a relatively small swing.

Labour were triumphant in Portswood ward, which also includes St Denys, with Lisa Mitchell taking Conservative Paul O'Neill's seat.

Labour had 34 seats in Slough, the Conservatives nine and Independent one.

Councillor Chris Emmas-Williams, who represents Codnor and Waingroves, said that next year's election will feature 14 seats held by the Conservatives and just one held by Labour, which he feels gives them scope for a comeback.

It was a successful night for the Lib Dems, who comfortably held their Eastham seat - Cllr Chris Carubia winning a big majority of 48%.

High-rise building in Brazil collapses during fire
A 26-storey building collapsed after being engulfed in flames in Brazil's largest city, São Paulo , killing at least one person. Search and rescue operations could take days. "People think that people who live in an occupation are animals".

Cllr Sean Anstee, the Conservative Group leader told Place North West: "We were clearly an obvious target for the Labour party".

Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative 1922 committee of backbenchers, told BBC News: 'It's deeply disappointing for me and for a lot of Trafford residents'.

Speaking prior to the results, and defending his position on recent development proposals, Anstee said: "The Turn Moss proposals, I think, enhance a hugely valued but in many respects massively under-utilised green space in Trafford".

It leaves the group with its biggest ever representation on the council, a feat trumpeted by their leader Malcolm Cowan. "Beyond that, there isn't very much for the Labour Party to celebrate".

The Tories also gained three seats.

But Labour lost overall control of Derby and Nuneaton and Bedworth in the Midlands.

Opposition leader Ron Hills was very pleased with the results, claiming that this was the first step back on the road for the Conservatives in regaining control of City Hall. "These aren't the results of a party that's about to storm the next general election".

The Tories retained control of Wandsworth Council, last won by Labour in 1974, after winning more than half the seats, as well as Westminster City Council.
