Twitter advises users to change passwords after 'bug' found

The advice is coming on the heels of a bug which Twitter say "stored passwords unmasked in an internal log".

The bad news is, they are still urging users to change the password associated with their Twitter account and, as further precaution, any account where that same password may have been used.

The glitch was related to Twitter's use of "hashing" and caused passwords to be written on an internal computer log before the scrambling process was completed, the blog said. This way, Twitter's systems can validate account credentials without revealing the password. "This is an industry standard". Twitter supposedly found the bug itself and fixed the issue, with the site saying there is "no reason to believe password information ever left Twitter's systems or was misuses by anyone". Though Twitter has fixed the Bug for precautionary measures and to stop any kind of misuse of user's account password.

"Since this is true, we are not forcing a password reset but are presenting the information for people to make an informed decision about their account", she added.

According to the company's first quarter 2018 earnings report, Twitter boasts 336 million monthly active users. "We believe this is the right thing to do".

It's a good way to create strong, unique passwords like PO9&Ee9*_B7*fpai1H - and to have a place that they're safely stored. You can go to 'Have I been Pwned' website to check if the password you're using has been accessed or exposed in the past.

Twitter nonetheless suggested that its users change their passwords "out of an abundance of caution".

The analyst thought it unlikely people would abandon Twitter simply for being asked to change passwords.

Enter a new password.

If you have implemented two-factor authentication for Twitter, the risk of access to your account is much lower, but someone who has access to the account data might use it to attempt to gain access to email and other Web accounts.

Digital passwords are firmly embedded in our everyday lives, but ensuring they're strong and secure isn't necessarily as easy as it seems.
