Instagram quietly launches payments for commerce

When we asked Instagram, a spokesperson confirmed that native payments for booking appointments like at restaurants or salons is now live for a limited set of partners.

Unlike the Messenger and WhatsApp payments feature, the Instagram feature isn't about peer-to-peer payments.

The function has started to pop up for some in the United Kingdom and USA, prompting speculation that it is part of a test run for a future global roll-out. After the initial setup, users can make purchases from within Instagram.

Instagram has quietly begun trialling a set of e-commerce features, allowing some users to pay for goods and services without leaving the app.

A year ago in March, Instagram had made its intention clear of allowing bookings for its new application services directly through its login profile.

Snapchat has a similar feature called Snapcash where the users can put in their debit and credit card information and use it for payments within the app. Once the in-app payments feature is expanded to more businesses, it could encourage many business profiles to give users the option to purchase their products or services directly via Instagram.

Reports of Instagram getting their own payment feature was making the rounds for some time now, however, the payment feature is only available to select partners and businesses in the us and UK.

After Facebook bought Instagram in 2012, the photo-sharing app been through an evolutionary change since its launch. After a long testing process, the feature is slowly rolling out to users. This feature conforms to that plan but also adds native payments to make the experience more seamless. For additional security, the registered profile can also be locked with a security pin.

WhatsApp has been growing ever since, with billions of users on the platform; one could imagine how much revenue could be generated by showing some ads to its users. All users will need to do is, head to the dedicated Insta page of the particular movie and click on the payments option.

Writing in a blog post at the time, a spokesman said: 'People come to Instagram to follow their passions - from travel and fashion to food, entertainment and everything in between.
