Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland but is criticised by many people including a large number of doctors who say it should be reserved for people who are terminally ill.

He chose fish and chips, followed by cheesecake, as his final meal on Wednesday night. A doctor placed the cannula in his arm, and Goodall had to turn the wheel for the pentobarbital to enter his system.

He had traveled to Switzerland from his home in Perth, in Western Australia, because he wanted to die by assisted suicide, which is not allowed in Australia, but is in Switzerland.

Exit International, which represented the scientist, said Goodall passed away while listening to Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".

His last words before losing consciousness were "this is taking an awfully long time", Nitschke said, but "he died shortly thereafter". Assisted suicide has also led to euthanasia - where legalized and elderly, disabled people, and mentally ill people are being euthanized against their will.

Assisted dying is banned in Australia, where the British-born Goodall lived for the last part of his life.

In less than 24 hours, Australia's oldest scientist will be injected with a lethal mix of drugs, closing the chapter on his 104-year life.

Italian Elia Viviani secures second consecutive stage win in Giro D'Italia
Ryan Mullen and Nicolas Roche both finished in the peloton in the same time as the stage victor . From Cervinia, the Giro will move on May 27th to Rome for the 21 and last stage.

Philip Nitschke, director of Exit International, said that before activating the drip, Goodall had to answer "several questions so he knew who he was, where he was and what he was about to do". He said: "I no longer want to continue life".

He requested that no funeral or remembrance service be held and that his body be donated to medicine or his ashes sprinkled locally.

"I'm content to leave them undone", he added.

"One wants to, at my age, even rather less than my age... to be free to choose death when the death is at an appropriate time", Goodall said during his final public appearance.

He said he would have preferred to die in Australia and previously voiced his resentment over the country's laws. "The question would not have arisen if I were not an old man", he said.

Before leaving for Switzerland, he told 9 News Australia family members, including his daughter and three grandsons, were accompanying him on the trip.

He produced dozens of research papers and until recently continued to review and edit for different ecology journals. After an uproar and support from scientists globally, the decision was reversed.
