"I think we have a very good chance of doing something very meaningful", Trump said.

Trump has struck a cautiously optimistic tone in discussing the prospects of reaching a deal during his upcoming summit with Kim, saying he is hopeful a historic agreement can be brokered while also warning the talks could prove unfruitful. "Kim Jong-un reached a satisfactory consensus on the issues discussed with the USA state secretary", the KCNA said.

The pair had previously exchanged insults and threats. "The United States is committed to the permanent, verifiable, irreversible dismantling of North Korea's weapons of mass destruction program". Kim has repeatedly expressed his commitment to denuclearization, but it's unclear on what terms.

The meeting has been preceded by a flurry of diplomacy between the two nations.

Trump entered office as an emboldened North Korea developed new generations of nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles capable of hitting the continental U.S. Those advances were the subject of President Barack Obama's starkest warning shortly before Trump took office, and this is a crisis he's convinced his negotiating skills can resolve.

A senior US official present for the exchange of detainees in Pyongyang told journalists traveling with Pompeo that a North Korean official informed the secretary of state that Kim had granted amnesties to the three Americans.

A cooler meeting in April.

Just hours before the announcement, Trump was at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland to greet the three Korean-Americans who had been released Wednesday by the DPRK.

Details of the highly anticipated meeting between the two heads of state were announced by Mr Trump on Twitter.

Mount also said Trump should keep USA troops based in South Korea off the table.

There has been no word from Pyongyang on what it might specifically offer at the summit, but key issues for the North will be the presence of 30,000 USA military personnel in South Korea, and the lifting of sanctions that are choking the economy.

The president had openly mused about the Korean DMZ as a meeting site, but Singapore was the only other location he had mentioned publicly as a possibility, and that's where the historic summit will occur. They agreed to pursue "complete denuclearization" and a peace treaty to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War.

State Department officials have taken great pains to keep three former North Korean detainees sequestered as they are flown back to the mainland United States.

Kim reportedly told Chinese President Xi this week that he would have no reason to hold on to his nuclear weapons if "relevant parties" - an apparent reference to the USA - dropped their "hostile policies" and removed "security threats" against his regime.

Speaking to NBC News, Pence says: "In this moment, the regime in North Korea has been dealing, as far as we can see, in good faith".

Singapore welcomed the news.

He said Thursday that the meeting would take place in Singapore on June 12.

Japan also welcomed word of the US-North Korea summit meeting on Thursday, hoping it would also pave the way for resolution concerning the abduction of Japanese nationals by Pyongyang.

Trump said that some details of the summit arrangements are still being negotiated.
