President Donald Trump from left greets Tony Kim Kim Hak Song seen in the shadow and Kim Dong Chul three Americans detained in North Korea for more than a year as they arrive at Andrews Air Force Base in Md. Thursday

Kim Jong-un said he accepted a USA proposal to grant the three detainees an amnesty, adding that his meeting with President Trump would be an "excellent first step" towards improving the situation on the Korean peninsula, according to the North Korean state news agency KCNA.

Three Americans released by North Korea on Wednesday have thanked President Donald Trump and his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for securing their freedom.

The location and date of the landmark meeting were announced in a presidential tweet just hours after Trump welcomed to the United States three American prisoners released by Pyongyang.

The decision to withdraw the United States from the hard-won multinational Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action "sends a critical message", the US president said on Tuesday. In the case of the Nuclear Weapon Ban Treaty, North Korea would sign if and when the United States signs.

A series of United States administrations have sent envoys, both official and unofficial, to Pyongyang in the hope of stopping North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

"We wish these Americans and their families the best, as they reconnect after a very hard time apart", Pompeo said. "We talked about the fact that America has often in history had adversaries who we are now close partners with and our hope that we could achieve the same with respect to North Korea".

In North Korea's bombastic rhetoric, "denuclearization" has, for years, been a byword for US troop withdrawals from South Korea - an idea that Kang appeared to reject.

Pompeo reportedly said he had a "good" and "substantive" conversation with communist dictator Kim Jong-un during his visit to North Korea this week.

It also will be acceptable to Beijing, North Korea's only major ally and still a strong influence over Pyongyang.

The White House cautioned that any provocation from North Korea before the meeting could jeopardize the summit.

"There's a danger here of the peace track moving more quickly than the denuclearization track", warned Abraham Denmark, an Asia expert and former senior USA defense official.

His stunning admission comes two weeks after the Koreas held a historic summit in which both countries - which have technically been at war since the 1950s - promised to work together to denuclearize the peninsula.

The way President Trump sees it, why go for a solid single when you can swing for a home run?

In the case of the NPT, North Korea would have to be recognised and included in the NPT as the world's ninth nuclear-armed state prior to abiding by Article IV of the treaty.

On top of that, Trump's team has few experts who have actually met or spoken to a North Korean official.

"A ceremony for dismantling the nuclear test ground is now scheduled between May 23 and 25, depending on weather condition", the official KCNA news agency said, citing a foreign ministry press release.

The commentary criticized Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, saying that bringing up an issue that has already been settled is a foolish behavior that aims to disrupt the peace process on the Korean Peninsula. "And I really believe it's going to be a great thing for North Korea, a great thing for South Korea and Japan".

North Korea is unlikely to comply with these steps easily.
