Still, the closure of the site could be a useful precedent for Washington and Seoul as they proceed with the nuclear negotiations with Pyongyang, analysts say.

And the North's Foreign Ministry said the ceremony for the occasion has been scheduled for between May 23 and 25, depending on weather conditions.

Reporters from China, Russia, the United States, Britain and South Korea would be allowed to cover the event on site to show it "in a transparent manner".

According to the announcement, the site's underground tunnels will be collapsed using explosives. Then, entries to the site will be blocked and all observation facilities, research institutes and guard structures will be removed.

Located in mountainous terrain in the northeast of the country, Punggye-ri is less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) from China.

The North Korean leader revealed during the summit that his country plans to publicly close the test site, announcing experts and journalists from foreign countries will be invited.

On Thursday, it was confirmed that Kim would finally hold a highly-teased meeting with US President Donald Trump in Singapore on 12 June.

The key issue expected to be discussed is North Korea's nuclear weapons programme, over which the two leaders furiously sparred in 2017. He added that the Trump administration was targeted on ensuring "we did not find yourself the place we have been earlier than" within the talks with North Korea. However, a final attempt by Bush to complete an agreement to fully dismantle North Korea's nuclear weapons program collapsed that December when the North refused to accept US-proposed verification methods.
