Clashes broke out between two groups in this famed tourist town killing two persons and more than 40 injured, including 10 policemen, an official said. Simultaneously, the police invoked section 144 of the CrPC prohibiting assembly of four or more persons in several parts of the city. Scores of vehicles and shops were also set ablaze.

Among those injured were seven women and a dozen policemen, including an assistant commissioner of police. Aurangabad Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe said that the situation is under control, and reported that there were two instances of violence, one occured during Friday night, and another that took place Saturday.

The situation escalated further on Saturday morning and an angry mob set properties on fire. "I appeal to people is not to believe in rumors and maintain peace".

The situation has since been brought under control, said a report in The Indian Express.

The deceased was identified as 62-years-old Jaganlal Bansile, who was a resident of the city's Shahaganj area.

Almost 100 shops and 50 vehicles were gutted in the clashes on Saturday morning after hundreds of youths took to the streets to pelt stones.

Reports reaching here from Aurangabad said that at least 100 shops and "50 to 60" two and four-wheelers were torched.

The police also fired in order to control the rioters, in which one child was injured.

"Most of the people had injuries on head and eyes due to stone pelting". It quoted an unidentified police official as saying that an independent corporator was responsible for instigating the violence.

Even the worst-hit are as were Shahganj, " Nawabpura, Rajabazaar and also Angribaug which continued to remain calm but stressed.

Meanwhile, All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen President Asaduddin Owaisi urged the chief minister to take action against the miscreants who indulged in riots. The youths from different groups burned some shops and also attacking each other with some pelting stones.

Located in the Marathwada region of the state, Aurangabad is world-renowned for its Renowned Ajanta-Ellora Caves, Bibi Ka Maqbara along with other historical landmarks.
