Google Accused of Harvesting Data from Millions of Australian Android Users

It is being speculated that Android users in Australia cough up about $445 million and $580 million for using Google. "We are aware of the reports in the media and we have asked Google to advise whether they are accurate", a spokesman for Australia's biggest telecom company Telstra said.

One example of this, the letter notes, is Google's ability to share blog posts about "holiday shopping habits" through the data it collects from users' Location History. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is investigating claims that Google harvests private data from Android users. The data is apparently used to help target users for advertising according to their location. "The types and quantity of such data that a user's device transmits would depend on the products or services they use.in some cases a user's settings", it added.

A fellow U.S. tech firm Oracle has reported that Google is prying on Australian mobile subscribers by not only tracking them but also collecting information related to a user's surfing patterns. Fortune further reports that "Oracle also said Android devices sent Google detailed information on people's searches and surfing". Moreover, the phone doesn't need to have any apps installed, or even a SIM card inserted. According to The Chronicle, these accusations were brought forward by Oracle, a computer technology corporation that has been involved in a long and bitter legal battle with Google over intellectual property that Oracle claimed Google stole.

Comstock supports president on Iran nuclear deal pullout; Virginia senators dissent
Fourth, Trump's decision to renege on an worldwide agreement harms USA credibility and its relationship with other world powers. Inspectors from the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency have said Iran is in compliance with the accord.

"The result is that Google, the unit of Alphabet behind Android, has access to data about individuals' locations and their movements that go far beyond a reasonable consumer expectation of privacy", the Quartz report says. Unless the phone is off, Google is able to constantly track it, whether their phones are in active use or set to airplane mode.

In Australia, 1 GB of data costs roughly $3.60-$4.50 a month.

In Australia, 10 million people use an Android phone, which is almost half of the population.

Oracle is of course in the middle of an ongoing lawsuit against Google in the United States with regards to Google supposedly using protected Java APIs in Android.
