Haspel Now Says CIA Waterboarding Never Should Have Happened

President Trump's pick to lead the CIA Gina Haspel picked up endorsements from key Democrats Tuesday ahead of a confirmation vote expected later this week.

Similar language was employed in editorials in both the Washington Post and the New York Times, in which the two leading pro-Democratic Party newspapers opposed Haspel's nomination because she failed to declare torture immoral during her testimony before the Intelligence Committee.

Haspel's letter was first reported by CNN. Mark Warner (D-Va.), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, Haspel said that the controversial methods that sought to gain information from terrorism suspects in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks "did damage to our officers and our standing in the world".

Amid criticism of Gina Haspel for her role in the Central Intelligence Agency's enhanced interrogation techniques like waterboarding, one green beret made a decision to argue that waterboarding wasn't actually torture.

In her Monday letter, Haspel said that she would refuse "to undertake any proposed activity that is contrary to my moral and ethical values".

Kennedy said in the 41-minute video posted to Facebook that he pulled this stunt to show that Central Intelligence Agency nominee Gina Haspel has been unfairly criticized for overseeing a Central Intelligence Agency black site where "enhanced interrogation techniques" were used on terrorist detainees shortly after 9/11.

President Trump just saved embattled Chinese phone maker ZTE
Analysts are watching to see if Trump's conciliatory stance will help ease the tensions over trade between the U.S. and China. Trump's willingness to aid ZTE in preserving Chinese jobs comes despite his condemnations of China on the campaign trail.

He said that if Trump, whom he described as a "strong-willed man", underwent waterboarding, "he may see its harshness and think that's exactly what we need".

"While I won't condemn those that made these hard calls, and I have noted the valuable intelligence collected, the program ultimately did damage to our officers and our standing in the world", Haspel wrote Warner.

Haspel - who would replace now-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the role - has gotten support from lawmakers on the left. Trump blasts White House leakers as "traitors" Haspel confirmation vote set for Wednesday This week: Trump heads to Capitol Hill MORE (D-Va.), the vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he would support her nomination. It was President Obama who decided that John Brennan, Jose Rodriguez, Gina Haspel and others involved in the torture program should not face prosecution.

Green beret United States army and former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy passed the waterboarding (simulated drowning) in support of the appointment of Gina Haesang for the post of CIA Director.

"It's not just the issue of torture", he said.
