Nepal's Kami Rita Sherpa climbs Mt. Everest for 22nd time

More than 60 mountaineers including Sherpa have successfully climbed the Everest since the beginning of the climbing season in 2018.

The rapid growth in the climbing industry has accompanied complaints of overcrowding on the mountain and fears that inexperienced mountaineers could run into trouble. He has also climbed numerous region's other high peaks, including K-2, Cho-Oyu, Manaslu and Lhotse.

Kami Rita, 48, comes from a long line of mountain climbers and first scaled Everest at age 24.

Foreigners must pay $11,000 for a permit but cut-price climbing outfits skimping on basic safety requirements have flourished in recent years, luring amateurs to the challenge.

Still, many veterans are unconvinced. "But I am not overexcited as it is a part of my professional job", Kami shared with Xinhua before leaving Kathmandu for expedition. "Getting lucky (so far) does not mean the route is any safer this year".

Rajeev Shrestha of the Seven Summit Adventure agency in Kathmandu said he received a message from the base camp about the successful climb.

"It has obviously excited me with the feeling that I am going to set a new world record".

Most hopefuls are escorted by a Nepali guide, meaning about 700 climbers will tread the same path to the top of the 8,850-metre (29,035-foot) peak in the coming weeks.

Officials said Kami Rita reached the summit on Wednesday with a team of foreign climbers, while Lakpa Sherpa reached the peak from the Chinese side.

She joined her first Everest expedition in 2000.

Climbers say that China seems committed to avoiding the mistakes made by the Nepal government by issuing too many permits and increasing traffic.

Nepal Mountaineering Association President Santa Bir Lama said climbing Everest can never be risk-free, no matter the side of the ascent, and that those moving to Tibet miss the chance of working with Nepal's famous Sherpa as well as - in his view - a more satisfying climb.
