It’s a slow start for ‘Solo’ at the Box office

The cause of the spinoff's disappointing performance may be due to Star Wars fatigue

The cause of the spinoff's disappointing performance may be due to Star Wars fatigue

The New York Times proposes that the Star Wars movies are coming out too frequently which is why Solo a Star Wars story had relatively poor box office.

Solo: A Star Wars Story was expected to rake in $130 to $150 million (GBP97.7 - 112.7 million) domestically and $300 million (GBP225.5 million) globally, but the star-studded movies is now expected to just squeak past $100 million in North America and $148.3 million (GBP111.4 million) worldwide. It's a good movie, even if it's a bit dependent on references to Han Solo's great exploits and forcing them into visual context.

The production woes that led to Ron Howard replacing Phil Lord and Chris Miller are just a part of the reason Solo is struggling to make Star Wars money.

Solo is now tracking the lowest opening for a Star Wars movie. "Infinity War" added $16.5 million in its fifth weekend to bring its domestic total to $621.7 million and its global sales to $1.9 billion - both among the highest of all-time. Many fans are blaming the Star Wars fatigue for the underperformance of the movie, but Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis doesn't agree with this theory. After debuting with $125 million last weekend, the R-rated Ryan Reynolds sequel dropped 66 percent to second place with $42.7 million and an estimated $53.5 million four-day haul.

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy.

With so many Star Wars films and stand-alone projects in the works, it's possible fan interest is dying out.

For comparison, Rogue One opened to $155.1 million in 2016, and The Last Jedi grabbed $220 million in its opening weekend in 2017.

It is a huge total for any franchise film, but expectations for Star Wars releases are a world apart.

That may sound like a lot, but it's a particularly disappointing outcome for a film set in the Star Wars universe. "It is summer, after all", said Dergarabedian. It's amusing how the dialogue in the Star Wars movies can still sometimes surprise you. Disney and Lucasfilms released the previous three "Star Wars films" in December, but "Solo: A Star Wars Story" was released mere five months after "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". The numbers out Monday from the industry tracking group comScore are for Friday through Monday at theaters in the United States and Canada.
