Serena Williams has always been known for her bold on-court looks, and in her return to the French Open overnight, she certainly didn't disappoint.

Although the tennis star had a relatively smooth pregnancy - that included an Australian Open win - her daughter's birth wasn't without complications.

"The catsuit, I had a lot of problems with my blood clots, and, God, I don't know how many I have had in the past 12 months", she said.

"She's playing unbelievable, and she's had such an fantastic year last year and this year as well", said the three-times French Open champion and former world No.1.

"You want to play the big names and you want to test yourself against the best, and I think any opportunity you can do that is good", she said. "[The suit] definitely has little functionality to it".

Williams told Harper's Bazaar that although she was now ready to have another child, she had gone through some tough times before returning to the court for the first time at the Fed Cup in North Carolina in February.

"I'm always living in a fantasy world", she added. "So it's a fun suit but it's also functional, so I can be able to play without any problems".

Dressed in a skintight, all-in-one black bodysuit, broken up by a vivid scarlet belt, Williams captivated the French crowd from the start of the contest to its 7-6 (4), 6-4 conclusion.

Prominent Russian journalist who criticised Kremlin shot dead in Kiev
He apologized to his wife for putting her through a "nightmare", but said there was no other alternative to playing dead. The surprise came as Gritsak held the news conference to announce that Ukrainian police had solved the reported killing.

She also needed surgery to have a filter inserted into a major vein, preventing new clots from migrating to her lungs.

"Two years has been a long time but I trained really hard on the clay".

Williams, the 2002, 2013 and 2015 champion in Paris, was on Tuesday playing a claycourt match for the first time since she finished runner-up to Garbine Muguruza in the 2016 final in Paris. "Olympia was born and she had my arms, and instead of being sad and fearful about what people would say about her, I was just so happy".

VideoThe tennis career of Bernard Tomic has taken another freaky chapter, with the Aussie losing out to a player who drove more than ten hours to make the match.

Williams, the 23-time major champion, gave birth to a daughter in September and saw her rankings tumble while she was out. "It's really fun", she said, referencing the fictional nation at the centre of the Black Panther blockbuster movie.

"You know, emotionally I think it's different, because I'm so emotionally attached to my daughter".

At just 17 years old, the wildcard Barty fell 6-2, 6-1 against the top-seeded American in the first round of the 2014 Australian Open. She could be considered the most unlucky of seeds in a Grand Slam, for there can never have been a more unsafe floater in the draw. It was a solid performance from Barty, who came into this tournament dealing with a back issue that forced her to retire in the middle of the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
