Republican Missouri Governor Eric Greitens has resigned amid his sexual misconduct scandal

Eric Greitens announced his resignation Tuesday afternoon, leaving behind him a brief and tumultuous legacy and moving on from his first public office with the continued prospect of criminal prosecution related to his 2016 campaign.

For those fellow Republicans who had strenuously urged his resignation, Greitens' exit provides the divided party a chance to reunify at the start of a summer campaign season in which it's seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen.

On May 14, St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner abruptly dropped a felony invasion-of-privacy charge against Greitens alleging that he took a photo of an at least partially nude woman without her consent in March 2015 and transmitted it in a way that could be accessed by a computer. But, she says, details won't be released until Wednesday (5/30).

May 21 - A judge appoints a special prosecutor, Jackson County prosecutor Jean Peters Baker, to decide whether to refile the invasion of privacy case against Greitens. At this morning's press conference, Gardner said that she faced both praise and criticism for bringing the two cases against Greitens.

Facing allegations of sexual assault, a felony charge, and the looming threat of impeachment, Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens resigned on Tuesday.

Greitens was elected in 2016, and served roughly 17 months in office.

During her testimony to the House investigative committee, the woman said Greitens invited her to his home and offered to show her "how to do a proper pull-up".

Royal weddings have a history of being among the most-viewed TV events of the year, but 2018 may turn out to be different. American actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry , who Wednesday may 19, will leave on a wedding trip to Alberta, Canada.

His resignation is effective 5 p.m. Friday. Our review of this case, as I have stated before, will be pursued without fear or favor. That allegation stems from an investigation led by the office of Missouri's attorney general, which said it had found probable cause that Greitens had transferred or obtained a donor list from the nonprofit he founded and used it for political gain.

Mr. Greitens has admitted the affair but said that it was consensual and that he didn't break any laws. "I cannot allow those forces to continue to cause pain and difficulty to the ones I love".

The woman's then-husband released a secretly recorded conversation in which she described the affair. Like Gardner, the special prosecutor is a Democrat.

Many questioned why she would praise the service of someone who took action to reverse the city's long-sought minimum wage increase for St. Louis workers, something Krewson supported. A lawyer for the group, who also represents Greitens' campaign, said Tuesday that the group was considering appealing the order. A House investigatory committee had subpoenaed Greitens to testify next Monday during a special monthlong session focused exclusively on his potential discipline.

Greitens, a married father of two young boys, repeatedly denied blackmailing the woman. "I wish incoming Governor Mike Parson well, and stand ready to assist him in his transition. The Governor's decision today honors that duty and allows Missouri to move forward toward a better tomorrow".
