The United States has threatened to impose tariffs on up to $50 billion of Chinese products in a dispute over Beijing's aggressive tactics to challenge U.S. technological dominance; Trump has asked U.S. Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer to look for another $100 billion in Chinese products to tax.

"China has demonstrated that it does not want a trade war, while at the same time revealing that it is not afraid of one either", the state-run Global Times, which is run by the Communist Party's mouthpiece, the People's Daily, said in an editorial.

While details are still being finalised, both countries worked to implement the consensus reached from earlier trade talks in Washington in various fields such as agriculture and energy, which Beijing says will be void if US President Donald Trump imposes in trade sanctions to keep up pressure.

"Reform and opening up and expanding domestic demand are China's national strategies".

It says the two sides have made concrete progress on many areas but the details are left for final approval.

It referred instead to a consensus they reached last month in Washington, when China agreed to increase significantly its purchases of us goods and services.

A White House statement last week, which took aim at years of "unfair" trade practices, warned the U.S. would pursue 25% tariffs on $50bn (£37bn) worth of Chinese imports.

Neither country has implemented the tariffs yet and continued discussions to find a way out of the impasse.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says U.S. and Chinese officials have discussed specific American export items Beijing might buy as part of its pledge to narrow its trade surplus with the United States.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Saturday that the push to have China purchase more American goods was partially meant to shrink a $375 billion U.S. trade deficit with the country.

United States leverage against China appears to have been weakened by a sour mood among USA allies after Washington imposed tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico. "This is about structural changes", Mnuchin said Saturday.

The purchases are partly aimed at shrinking the $375bn U.S. goods trade deficit with China.

After a three-day meeting of finance ministers from the G7 industrial nations that ended Saturday in Canada, Canadian Finance Minister Bill Morneau issued a summary saying the other six members want Trump to hear their message of "concern and disappointment" over the us trade actions.

"But I also fundamentally believe that if there are structural changes that allow our companies to compete fairly, by definition, that will deal with the trade deficit alone".

It's when countries attack each other's trade with taxes and quotas. Germany is also hoping its steel exports to the USA will be exempted from sanctions.

Trade analysts feared that decision might alienate allies who share complaints about Chinese technology policy and a flood of low-cost steel, aluminum and other exports they say are the result of improper subsidies and hurt foreign competitors.
