Today, Sharapova suffered her heaviest defeat at the Slams since her 6-3, 6-0 battering at the hands of Victoria Azarenka in the 2012 Australian Open final. Halep saved two match points to win that one. "All in all, I don't think anyone can complain". "My head won it". I stayed focused. I never gave up.

"I missed a lot in the beginning".

"I have actually been told quite often that I'll never win or do well because I'm too nice of a person and I just don't have it. Then I changed a little bit of tactics and it worked".

World number one Halep made a slow start, misfiring on her first serve and spraying her groundstrokes wide early on in a duel that lasted more than two hours, before steadily wearing down her opponent.

Stephens' break-rate will be tested against her good friend Keys in the semifinal. That match lasted a total of 35 games, marking the longest women's semifinal at the Australian Open in the Open era.

It was not enough, though, as Wimbledon champion Muguruza bulldozed her way through the rest of the set to secure her place in the semi-finals.

Halep reached the semifinals in a Grand Slam event for the sixth time in her career, matching Ilie Nastase for the most by a Romanian male or female in the Open era. She hurried up her strokes and easily Halep sealed the eight win in as many matches against a lefty opponent and against a top 20 player this season. Kerber won the sixth of the nine played this year to move even nearer to her maiden Roland Garros semifinal. Sharapova wrote in her autobiography.

Thousands in the Puna area had to evacuate after lava fissures started opening in neighbourhoods a month ago. The state is issuing citations to those who needed to be rescued from mandatory evacuation areas.

Sharapova, 31, was broken in the opening game of the second set which she immediately retrieved. Serena Williams is a three-time French Open champion, Jennifer Capriati won in 2001, and the legendary Chris Evert retired with a 94.5% winning record on clay, triumphing seven times at Roland Garros.

But they hadn't played since 2014, back before Muguruza was as confident and successful as she is these days. "So I think that's why I won today", Halep said. If she can channel that same degree of aplomb and expertise in the semi, Halep doesn't have much of a chance.

I want to side with Halep, but I can't bet against Muguruza in her current form. I think there's a difference between being intense and wanting it and fighting and just not being nice, so that's something that I have always stayed true to.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, the last woman to win the French Open without dropping a set was Justine Henin, who did so in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007. When we get on the court, it's time to compete.

But to keep the drama going, Halep's error-strewn version showed up briefly and she surrendered the first set rather tamely.

Sharapova did not play a point in the fourth round, because Serena Williams pulled out of their much-anticipated showdown with an injured chest muscle. Let's say once again I exit a Grand Slam disappointed and frustrated, because I know I could do better. ". Coming into this part of the year, I was losing a few first-round matches, matches that I wanted to be winning, of course".
