Mexico takes aim at Trump and USA midterm elections

Now the U.K., France and Germany, annoyed by Trump's decision to renege on the Iran deal, are making clear they will also press the United States to guarantee them immunity from secondary sanctions for trading with the Islamic Republic. That led to threats of retaliation. The EU also attends. As of May 31, they've all expired, and the USA government decided not to renew them.

He also says he relayed that message to a senior member of the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office. He has highlighted his efforts on Twitter, writing Monday: "The U.S. has made such bad trade deals over so many years that we can only WIN!"

Trump expanded the tariffs on steel and aluminum to the United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union on May 31 after extending exemptions in March.

To see why these three US allies are so upset, one need only look at the biggest suppliers of USA metals.

That put it behind only Canada in terms of the value of USA exports. What we are fighting over now, as the new order emerges, is whether the USA wants to have the most important seat at the table or not. Pork, one of America's top exports to Mexico, is a major export from Iowa and Colorado, where Republicans face tough races.

What are tariffs? Taxes on products made overseas.

And Laura Dawson, director of the Canada Institute at the Wilson Center think tank in Washington, said that - despite the current drama - ties between the two countries on everything from commerce to the Stanley Cup final are strong enough to weather the storm. He went further in March, accusing allies of hurting the USA more than its enemies have.

So far, only Canada and Mexico have done so. In 2017, it was the second-largest importer of USA steel and steel products, which will now face an additional 25 percent tariff, in line with what the US has imposed.

Babchenko faked his own death in elaborate sting operation
His murder follows the earlier death of Ukranian-Belarussian journalist Pavel Sheremet by auto bomb in central Kiev in 2016. The Ukrainian Security Service said he, in turn, paid a potential gunman $30,000 to carry out the hit, the newspaper says.

The move follows a US decision to impose tariffs on imports of Mexican steel and aluminum purchases, which took effect on Friday.

While tariffs on these products won't have much of an impact on the overall US economy, they could be especially painful for particular industries or regions. "The World Trade Organisation, for example, has become completely ineffectual".

Countries that import US pig meat. Certain cheeses and bourbon will be hit with 20% to 25% duties.

Rising trade tensions between Canada and the U.S. threaten to drive the key allies apart. The automotive industry is particularly vulnerable in this regard.

Trudeau publicly called Trump's decision to impose new tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum "insulting".

Randall Schweller, a rare global relations scholar who supports Trump, said the death of the Soviet Union and the decline of Daesh (also known as ISIS) mean "the USA doesn't need its allies like it used to".

Scheer's positions largely echo the stance the governing Liberals are taking on the matter with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau outright rejecting a one-on-one trade talk with the USA and drawing a line in the sand with the US over the idea of a five-year sunset clause on a new NAFTA deal. One estimate put it at an additional $175 per vehicle.

As just a small trading partner with the USA in steel and aluminium, Australia successfully lobbied for an exemption from the tariffs. When President Bush tried a similar tariff in 2001, it was estimated that it cost American consumers $400,000 for each domestic steel job saved. The US has a massive trade deficit with China. Whether tensions can be turned down before serious harm is done remains to be seen.
