Pakistan's former military ruler Pervez Musharraf had recently suggested to authorities here to negotiate with the U.S. the release of Shakeel Afridi, the jailed Pakistani surgeon who had helped Central Intelligence Agency in tracking down Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, in exchange for capture or elimination of Fazlullah.

A spokesman for the Pakistani army said it could not confirm that Fazlullah was killed in the drone strike.

That ceasefire does not include counterterrorism efforts against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, al Qaeda and other terrorist groups.

Pakistan's military says that it has killed at least 4,000 fighters working for the TTP and its allies since 2013. More than 140 children and their teachers were massacred.

Two years earlier, Yousafzai, 15 at the time, was gunned down in her native Swat Valley for advocating girls' education.

He is believed to have been responsible for a number of atrocities, including the 2014 attack on an army-run school in Peshawar that resulted in the deaths of nearly 150 students and teachers, and ordering an assassination attempt on Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai in Swat in 2012.

While violence has dropped in recent years, the TTP and its affiliates continue to carry out sporadic large-scale attacks targeting Pakistani security forces and civilians.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on Friday telephoned Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Caretaker Prime Minister Justice (r) Nasirul Mulk and the shared news about killing of Mullah Fazalullah in a drone strike in Afghanistan Province Kunar. Four other Pakistani Taliban commanders were also killed in the attack.

The US State Department offered a $5 million reward for Fazlullah in March, the same month Pakistani sources said his son was killed in an American drone strike on a TTP training facility. Also known as Mullah Radio for his fiery broadcast speeches, Fazlullah fled to Afghanistan in 2010 after the Pakistani army launched a large-scale onslaught on his Tehrik Nizaf-e-Sharia'h Mohammadi (TNSM) or Movement for Enforcement of Sharia'h in the Swat valley.

A statement from US Forces-Afghanistan claimed that the strike didn't put at risk the ongoing and unilateral ceasefire initiated by the Afghan government. "This is a new beginning of cooperation", said retired Brig. Gen.

The US military said it carried out an airstrike aimed at a senior militant figure in the eastern Afghan province of Kunar on the Pakistan border.

The United Nations tallied 763 civilians killed and almost 1,500 injured in just the first three months of the year.

Fazlullah assumed leadership of the Pakistani Taliban after Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a USA drone strike in 2013. His predecessor, Baitullah Mehsud, died of injuries sustained in a drone strike in 2009.
