Antoine Griezmann scored the first VAR-assisted penalty awarded in the history of the World Cup as title hopefuls France battled to a 2-1 win over gutsy Australia in Kazan yesterday.

With France's Group C match against Australia deadlocked, Paul Pogba threaded a pinpoint pass to Antoine Griezmann, who went down in the box following Joshua Risdon's challenge.

Griezmann told beIN Sports TV: "It's a good (thing) there was video in this case".

"He was standing very close to the moment of the penalty, and he said directly, "Go (play) on". I got a lot of reactions, let's say that out of 10 people seven said it was a penalty and three said no penalty.

Credit where its due, Australia can take inspiration from their display for the group games to come but despite getting themselves back on level terms after the hour mark, they will be disappointed to have succumbed to the pressure created by France in the final 20 minutes of the game.

"From the vision I did see up here, maybe my eyes aren't great, but it kind of looked as if there was no contact made (with the ball), therefore the penalty was the right decision", Moore said.

France's talent will be enough to get them through their group and may even carry them to the quarter-finals, but their lack of cohesion is a big problem and one that may be hard to resolve before the end of the tournament. It was complicated, the Australian team was very good.

Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player to represent France at a World Cup at 19 years, 178 days.

The incident signalled the first use of VAR in the World Cup resulting in an intervention which led to a goal. Former England striker and pundit Gary Lineker added: "The fact that opinion is divided on the Griezmann VAR penalty decision suggests that even if it probably was a penalty, the decision should not have been changed".

Deschamps had warned of the improvement Australia have made under Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, who took over from Ange Postecoglou in January.

But Australia soon settled and could well have taken the lead, Leckie's flick-on header from an Aaron Mooy free-kick producing a smart save from France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Flamengo forward Guerrero had a 14-month ban for testing positive for cocaine overturned just weeks before the tournament began and celebrated by scoring twice in a friendly against Saudi Arabia. "But we have to do better, and we're capable of doing so".
