Judge jails ex-Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort pending trial, citing obstruction charges

President Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort arrives for the hearing at a federal court in Washington on Friday.

The 69-year-old Paul Manafort was reportedly engaging in attempted witness tampering while under house arrest awaiting his trial.

In issuing her ruling, Jackson said she had struggled with the decision to jail Manafort while he awaits trial and considered alternatives.

USA TODAY is providing live coverage outside the federal courthouse where Manafort is testifying beginning at 10:00 am ET in the player above. "This isn't middle school, I can't take your phone". "Very unfair!" With this, Manafort will have to prepare for two federal trials in the coming weeks - one in Washington before Jackson on September 17, and one in Alexandria, Virginia on July 25 on bank- and tax-fraud charges, according to the reports.

Shortly before Manafort was due in court Friday, Trump spoke to reporters at an impromptu appearance and said "Paul Manafort worked for me for a very short period of time".

Kilimnik, who has denied having connections to Russian intelligence agencies, was also involved in the ghostwritten op-ed matter, which prosecutors also connect to Person A in the latest filing.

Trump said it was unfair to send Manafort to jail. And he argued that Manafort could not have known the men he contacted were witnesses.

Trump's lawyer moves against Stormy Daniels' attorney
Earlier this week, sources told ABC News that Cohen's lawyers are expected to leave the case in the near future. Trump has also acknowledged that he personally reimbursed Cohen for that payment.

His jailing Friday came after he was accused of attempting to tamper with witnesses in his criminal case while he was on house arrest.

Prosecutors have said that Manafort's role in the campaign and long-standing ties to Russian-backed politicians, financiers and others merited investigation into whether any of them served as back channels to Russia.

She explained that she could not just release Manafort with more restrictions after he was charged with obstruction for reaching out to potential witnesses in his case.

Legal experts say Mueller wants to keep applying pressure on Manafort to plead guilty and assist prosecutors as Gates did and is cooperating with the probe after cutting a plea deal.

"I have no appetite for this", Judge Jackson said.

Mueller's office indicted Manafort in October on five charges: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading Foreign Agents Registration Act statements and false statements.

Manafort has repeatedly declared his intention to fight the charges in both jurisdictions, with his attorneys saying that he is being wrongly prosecuted for financial activities that have nothing to do with Russian interference in the 2016 election, the main focus of Mueller's investigation. One of the documents was a 2013 memo from Mr Manafort to former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych.
