Merkel rejects ultimatum on migrants, has two weeks to reach European Union deal

The German chancellor is facing a challenge from her hardline interior minister

Merkel said she would seek an agreement with European nations at a June 28-29 EU summit, but stressed there was "no automatism" about rejecting asylum seekers if no deals are reached. And she has stuck to her insistence that there needs to be a European-wide solution to migration issues, despite a lack of progress so far.

"Emergency talks have, as yet, failed to soothe an increasingly bitter row, which is being replicated, albeit in perhaps rather calmer tones, in plenty of other European Union member states - between those who believe there is still a chance for Europe to rise unified to the migration challenge and the, largely populist, figures who are sick of waiting for it act", adds the author.

The threatened collapse of Merkel's coalition government comes as the German people have apparently had enough of open doors and are looking to start sending numerous new arrivals back where they came from.

The prospects of Merkel reaching a deal on migration with Conte on Monday would appear slim.

On July 1, after the completion of a two-day European Union summit, Merkel will meet with the CDU executive to discuss next steps, the chancellor said Monday.

In his previous job as Bavarian governor, Seehofer was one of the leading critics of Merkel's decision in 2015 to leave Germany's borders open as migrants streamed across the Balkans.

Merkel and Conte agreed on the need to beef up Frontex, the EU's external border police, and to work with worldwide organizations to tackle the causes of migration in Africa and the Middle East, Merkel said.

President Trump tweeted Monday morning that "Crime in Germany is way up" because of immigration to the country.

The survey turns up the pressure on Merkel, who has faced a backlash for allowing into Germany more than one million people fleeing war and misery in Syria, Iraq and elsewhere since 2015.

North Korean and United States negotiators also met in Singapore for final preparations on the eve of the unprecedented summit. The bodyguards first made an appearance in April when they were spotted during the Peace Summit in South Korea.

Bavarian governor Markus Soeder and the party's top federal lawmaker, Alexander Dobrindt, have been even more vehement than Seehofer in demanding immediate action on migration.

"We're showing that we're not just working for ourselves but for the entire union", Merkel said. The CSU is determined to show that it's tough on migration as it faces a challenging October state election in Bavaria, and argues that that is the best way to cut support for the far-right Alternative for Germany.

The interior minister, Horst Seehofer, until recently leader of the CSU, wants tighter controls at the German border.

Merkel's woes come as European Union countries are once again at loggerheads over immigration, triggered by Italy's refusal this month to allow a rescue ship carrying 630 migrants to dock.

Perhaps reflecting that nervousness, Seehofer later added: "Nobody wants the end of the coalition, a collapse of the alliance or the fall of the government".

Merkel is strictly against this change, saying such a unilateral move by Germany could threaten the very unity of Europe.

The facts: Here's what Mr. Trump got right: Angela Merkel's coalition is fragile, and may soon unravel due to her immigration policies.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, left, talks to Chancellor Angela Merkel in parliament.

Political allies of Merkel have given her until July 1 to find a solution to the issue with her European partners.

Data from the German interior ministry does indicate that the proportion of crimes committed by foreigners has gone up in the past five years, but this can not be attributed specifically to migrant arrivals.
