U.S. Expected to Withdraw From UN’s Human Rights Council

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said she had traveled to the council's headquarters in Geneva a year ago to call for reforms, to no avail.

"For our part, the United States will not sit quietly while this body, supposedly dedicated to human rights, continues to damage the cause of human rights", said Ambassador Nikki Haley earlier this year.

Ms Haley previous year accused the council of "chronic anti-Israel bias" and said the USA was reviewing its membership. The official claims countries like China, Egypt and Russian Federation worked to undermine USA reform efforts, and that the Council has passed more resolutions this year condemning Israel than Iran, Syria and North Korea combined.

Washington has long accused the council of being biased against Israel.

USA ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley made the announcement at a press conference in Washington.

Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, said: "The Trump administration's withdrawal is a sad reflection of its one-dimensional human rights policy: Defending Israeli abuses from criticism takes precedence above all else". They asked not to be identified discussing a decision that hadn't yet been made public.

The U.S. has always been believed to be preparing to leave the UNHRC over what administration officials say is unfair treatment of Israel, but the expected announcement will come a day after its chief called the Trump administration's family separation policy "unconscionable".

The council was formed in 2006, with the goal of helping to ensure human rights were upheld worldwide. It comes a day after the UNHCR denounced the Trump administration's policy of separating children from their migrant parents at the U.S. border with Mexico, with United Nations human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein calling the practice "unconscionable".

After the game, the Argentine spoke out on his frustrations, noting: "I feel responsible for the draw. Gurriel apologised and was suspended for the first five games of this season.

The US could withdraw from arguably the most important human rights body in the world.

Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that 'America First does not mean America Alone, ' the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office. Item 7 on "Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories" has been part of the council's regular business nearly as long as it has existed. No country has ever dropped out voluntarily. Although the USA could have remained a non-voting observer on the council, a US official said it was a "complete withdrawal" and that the United States was resigning its seat "effective immediately".

"By withdrawing from the council, we lose our leverage and allow the council's bad actors to follow their worst impulses unchecked - including running roughshod over Israel".

These states include Venezuela, China and Saudi Arabia.

Under the presidency of George W. Bush, the United States declined to join the council, questioning how different it would be than the commission.

In March 2011, the U.N. General Assembly unanimously suspended Libya's membership in the council because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Mr Pompeo said the council has failed to protect the most vulnerable.

If the United States leaves the council today it will not be present for the July 2 discussion the council plans to conduct in regards to Israel and Palestine.
