When Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri scored a 90th-minute victor against Serbia in their group E match at the World Cup on Saturday morning there was a hidden, or not-so-hidden, message behind his celebration. A deflected shot from Shaqiri fell beautifully for Granit Xhaka to run onto the loose ball and rifle the shot past Stojkovic to even the scores.

"Sometimes there's a lack of recognition and that's a pity because we played very well", grumbled Switzerland boss Vladimir Petkovic in the aftermath of that game.

"In football you have always emotions and you can see what I did and it's just emotion", he said in reference to his controversial celebration.

With the match heading for a 1-1 draw, Xherdan Shaqiri raced through on goal in the closing stages of the match and squeezed home a decisive victor, leaving the Swiss just one win away - against a fragile Costa Rica side - from the knock-out stages. Serbia does not recognize Kosovo's independence and relations between the two countries remain tense. "But there is this history between them and the Albanians in our team, so it was not easy".

We had 20 finishes but we should have make the goalkeeper work harder. "So I think we go with that mentality". We've done a lot of preparation, which has been building up for a long time .

Shaqiri was born in Kosovo, the former Serbian province that declared independence in 2008, while Xhaka's parents are originally from Kosovo and they are of Albanian heritage. "We know everything about Switzerland", stated their head coach Mladen Krstajic after their first match, which was also his first competitive game in charge of the side. Serbia striker Aleksandar Mitrovic asked recently.

Serbia must beat Brazil in their final game to qualify without relying on the result of the Swiss game against Costa Rica, who are eliminated after losing their first two games.

Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic has vowed to keep up his side's high-tempo, physical approach that earned them a draw with Brazil. Mitrovic came close in the 19th minute when he controlled a cross from Branislav Ivanovic on his chest and sent a bicycle kick over the bar. Against Switzerland, he is likely to be the key player once again. Serbia will face Brazil in Moscow at the same time.

Shaqiri scored a late game-winner and Swiss fans lost their minds.
