Today Is the Day Every Last Toys R Us Store Closes

"Promise us just this one thing: Don't ever grow up".

Toys "R" Us closed the last of its USA stores Friday, ending the chain known to generations for their brightly colored logo and Geoffrey the giraffe mascot.

The photo shows the giraffe in an empty Toys "R" Us, holding a suitcase and waving goodbye.

It's been a rough year for Toys "R" Us, whose founder Charles Lazarus died aged 94 on March 22, the same day the company was scheduled to begin its liquidation sale.

The nationwide shutdown of Toys "R" Us has left a $11 billion market void.

Marijuana Bill C-45 Is Passed: Now What?
The Senate voted 52 to 29 in favour of a revised bill from the elected House of Commons, and there were two abstentions. Now that it's passed through both houses of Parliament, Trudeau has to decide the date when legalization is official.

In a dire retail landscape, more than 8,000 United States shops closed in 2017, roughly double the average annual store closures in the previous decade, according to data from the International Council of Shopping Centres.

Earlier this year in March, the company announced it will close all remaining 700 stores in the us after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September last year and struggling to find a buyer.

Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in a September in a bid to stay afloat amid growing debts. Whether this leads to a relaunched store is anyone's guess, but the brand as a whole isn't dead regardless, as the division of Toys "R" Us in Canada is still open for business.

After the sad photo of Geoffrey went viral, the San Antonio Zoo set up a GoFundMe page to raise $100,000 with the goal to "persuade the owners at Toys " R " Us to join the effort to save giraffes by donating the use of their most recognizable intellectual property", their beloved mascot. "I was surrounded by children".

Whether or not the zoo reaches its fundraising goal, the store closures and empty shelves do not mark the end of the memories so many people have of Toys "R" Us.
