"The stakes are simply too high for anything less", Schumer said in a statement. He called Kavanaugh a "brilliant jurist" who has "devoted his life to public service". Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called him a "superb choice" who is well-qualified for the job.

"Judge Kavanaugh has the qualifications that make him immensely qualified to take a seat on the highest court in the land".

"My judicial philosophy is straightforward", Kavanaugh said.

A confirmation would solidify the Supreme Court's conservative majority and continue President Trump's push to shift the federal bench to the right. If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace long-serving conservative Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement on June 27 at age 81. Vice President Mike Pence can break a tie, but even a single Republican breaking with the party would hold up the nomination, assuming the Democrats are unanimous in opposition. Those most likely to cross the aisle are thought to be Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind., all of whom are running for re-election in states Trump won in 2016. "They're good judges. I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court". Kavanaugh, with the confidence of the administration and concern from Left and Right alike, heads to the Senate.

Hearings for the most recent nominees to the Supreme Court have lasted four or five days, though there were 11 days of hearings for Robert Bork's nomination in 1987. Add Supreme Court as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Supreme Court news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

Presidents weigh all sorts of considerations in deciding on a Supreme Court nominee, often beginning with the big question: Will the choice be confirmed by the Senate?

"I am pleased to say that I have found without doubt that person". "It should and must take place again now".

The new justice can be expected to cast crucial votes on other matters of national importance including gay rights, gun control, the death penalty and voting rights.

"His nomination should be a non-starter for every member of the Senate concerned about the integrity of the special counsel's investigation and anxious about the Court undermining the rights of women to make their own medical decisions; civil rights; the rights of Americans to quality, affordable healthcare; voting rights; the rights of workers to organize for better wages and working conditions; and more", Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey) said in a statement on Monday.

"Mr. President, I am grateful to you and I'm humbled by your confidence in me", Kavanaugh said Monday night.

Kavanaugh now faces the confirmation process.

The White House did announce its "sherpa" for the eventual selection: Former Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, who will be helping the nominee through the arduous confirmation process.

The officials underscored that McConnell did not push any choice on the president. Kennedy administered the judicial oath to his former clerk. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a longtime member of the Judiciary Committee.

"I will oppose Judge Kavanaugh's nomination with everything I have, and I hope a bipartisan majority will do the same".

Kavanaugh graduated from Yale Law School and served as a clerk to Justice Anthony Kennedy.

"I'm not looking for an ideologue", Kennedy said.

In her 20s, she co-authored a paper that said Catholic judges, if they are faithful to church teachings, are "morally precluded" from enforcing the death penalty.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, who once held a court seat open for almost a year before the 2016 election to keep former President Barack Obama from filling it, lambasted Democrats for announcing their opposition before Trump had decided on a nominee.
