The factory was formally inaugurated on Monday by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon-Jae In, underscoring Samsung's efforts to increase production in the world's fastest growing major mobile phone market. It will be officially inaugrated today by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon.

Past year in June, the consumer electronics major had announced that it would invest Rs 4,915 crore to double its manufacturing capacity for smartphones and refrigerators at its Noida plant.

Samsung, which has been assembling phones in India since 2007, also plans to export India-made handsets.

The facility is expected to help Samsung build more cheap phones to make gains in India, a market dominated by the likes of Xiaomi and Lenovo's Motorola unit. Over the weekend, Samsung opened the world's largest mobile phone factory on the outskirts of Delhi, via Bloomberg.

The more than 500 Korean companies operating in India were mostly concentrating in the automobiles, electronics and textiles "but going forward, we will expand cooperation to various areas, including shipbuilding, medical devices and food processing", Moon said. "In the past four years, the number of mobile manufacturing factories has gone up from two to 120".

Moon also said that "limitless possibilities" are present for the two countries if India's technological capabilities and human resources are combined with Korea's capital and industrial experience.

"Whenever I talk to business community representatives I always mention one thing - that I don't think there is a middle class home in India where a Korean product is not found", he added. "India and Korea have a long-standing history of exchange, you are a friend who helped us in time of need".

"As you may well know, the Moon Jae-in government is building a cooperative relationship with India and Asean, which are thought to be the next China, while upgrading the country's relationship with India and Asean countries to the level of its ties with the four super powers", Mr Kim said, according to Yonhap. India is a big opportunity across price segments, including 2G feature phones. Today, Samsung is the market leader across mobile segments. "This [plant] is a big step in the direction of making India a hub of world manufacturing".
