If confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the second justice installed by Trump, who nominated Neil Gorsuch to the court shortly after being inaugurated a year ago. Thomas Michael Hardiman of the Third Circuit, is also under consideration.

Kavanaugh is a former loyal aide to George W. Bush - serving as White House lawyer and staff secretary - but has received criticism from the right over a 2015 ruling on ObamaCare. Judge Kavanaugh also served as a Counsel for the Office of Independent Counsel under Ken Starr and as a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP.

"Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law", Trump said.

A handful of Senate Democrats running for re-election in states that Trump won handily in 2016 could face a hard vote on the court nominee, potentially providing Republicans with an additional buffer if they decide to support the president.

Republicans may have a narrower margin for error than they did when the Senate confirmed Trump's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, by a vote of 54-45 in April 2017. Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. Republicans will be looking to win their votes once more after a confirmation hearing that is expected to take place before the midterm elections.

More than 40 federal district and circuit court judges have been confirmed to lifetime appointments so far during Trump's term, and those judges will have enormous sway in shaping legal arguments nationwide. Democrats are voicing alarm about what the new justice could mean for charged issues such as abortion rights and gay rights.

Trump last week spoke with seven candidates, all drawn from a shortlist compiled by the conservative Federalist Society, about the Supreme Court.

Trump and McConnell have been in frequent contact since Justice Anthony Kennedy announced he would be stepping down from the court.

Republicans hold 51 seats in the Senate, though Arizona Sen. "At this critical juncture, with so many rights and liberties at stake, US Senators and the American people should expect an affirmative statement of support for the personal liberties of all Americans from the next Supreme Court nominee". They'll target three Democratic senators who voted for Gorsuch and who are running for re-election in states that Pres. Trump won. "Barrett said she tends to agree "with those who say that a justice's duty is to the Constitution", rather than a precedent she thinks is clearly in conflict with it". Kavanaugh's many written opinions provide insight into his thinking and also will be fodder for Senate Democrats who will seek to block his confirmation. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, told NPR's Morning Edition. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., would guide the nominee through the confirmation process, including preparing for meetings with senators.

Donald Trump has nominated a conservative appeals court judge to the U.S. Supreme Court, a move that could open the door to roll-backs of abortion and affirmative action as the right gains a firm majority on the country's highest bench. "What we need to know is that anyone coming onto the Supreme Court is going to uphold the law of the land and particularly a woman's right to decide what happens to her own body".
