Sebastian Vettel hoping to ‘kill Mercedes’ magic’ at British Grand Prix

Vettel triumphant in the battle of Silverstone

Last Sunday's British Grand Prix, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel extended his lead in the F1 Driver Standings over Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton by 8 points.

Hamilton, meanwhile, salvaged a second place finish after a collision with Kimi Raikkonen dropped him to the back of the field at the beginning of the race - an incident for which the Finnish driver was handed a 10-second time penalty.

Instead, the Mercedes driver slipped eight points behind Sebastian Vettel, with the real possibility that his German rival will be leading into the August break.

Shovlin has also explained that Hamilton's vehicle did not suffer any damage in the Raikkonen accident, despite the world champion voicing fears over the radio that it had.

The third-corner collision between Raikkonen and Hamilton was the key moment of the grand prix and afterwards the British driver, who refused to be interviewed immediately after the race, accused Ferrari of "interesting tactics" and noted it was the second time a Ferrari has "taken out" a Mercedes this season. But aided by a brace of Safety Cars and some breathless laps around the 5.8km Silverstone track, he brilliantly climbed to second by the chequered flag to stem the points loss to main rival and eventual victor Sebastian Vettel. Pierre Gasly was 10th for Toro Rosso. "I had the advantage of the tyres, but it was not easy to find a way through".

The Englishman clearly blamed Raikkonen, who was handed a 10-second penalty, for the crash and found it hard to face the Finn or accept an apology.

"It was my mistake", he said. "I deserved it", he added of the penalty.

Hamilton secured pole 24 hours earlier, but his getaway here was slow and it was not long before Vettel had passed the Brit for the lead with Bottas following suit.

The decision follows a request over the weekend by Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley (D), which he said was initially not granted. Buckley said he was "obviously" disappointed about the White House's initial decision not to lower the flags.

Hamilton was not without flaws, having thrown away his pole position with over-aggression on the start line, generating wheelspin that allowed Vettel to fly past.

"And I want to remind everyone that, in China, we had a situation between Vettel and Verstappen and nobody said anything". Frenchman Esteban Ocon finished seventh for Force India, who are now level on points with McLaren and ahead on podiums.

Raikkonen and Hamilton were involved in a first-lap incident.

A furious finale to match the frantic first lap looked certain when Ericsson then crashed at Turn One.

Out came the safety vehicle again. After both Vettel and Bottas pitted, it seemed like fight for victory was to be fought between these two.

After their strategic fiasco, in Austria, this was a bold move by Mercedes who took first and third on track with used medium tyres, but without the benefit of fresh "soft" tyres. Despite regular big crowds the future of the Silverstone race is in doubt after it triggered a break clause in its contract a year ago which will end its tenure as host after 2019 unless it reaches a new deal with F1.
