"I think it's kept us apart, it's kept us separated", Trump said.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich speaks in Oxon Hill, MD on February 27, 2015.

Aaron Blake of the Washington Post wrote that Wallace gave Putin "the grilling" that President Trump failed to deliver at the summit Monday in Finland. "It is the most serious mistake of his presidency and must be corrected - immediately". Even some usually friendly Fox News hosts, including Fox & Friends' Brian Kilmeade, implored Trump to clarify his comments.

"The only reason there was a walk-back is that the president was forced by pressure from many of my Republican friends here, from his allies in the media, and his own White House staff", Schumer said on the Senate floor.

But when Trump's answer on Wednesday immediately spawned a new round of news reports suggesting a president at odds with his intelligence advisers, and partial to Russian Federation, the White House was forced to restart damage control efforts that began after his widely panned performance in Helsinki.

Trump, who spent more than two hours with the Kremlin leader behind closed doors, also tweeted Tuesday that his summit went "even better" than his meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels last week.

Standing alongside the Kremlin boss, Trump acknowledged that his intelligence chiefs believe Russian Federation hacked and leaked Democrats' emails containing politically damaging information about his rival Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Most of the criticism gravitates around the moments when Trump cast doubt upon the American intelligence community, cozied up to Putin, and said the USA shares blame with Russian Federation for the deteriorated ties between the two countries.

Asked by reporters before a morning Cabinet meeting at the White House whether Russian Federation was still targeting the United States, Trump shook his head and said, "No".

US intelligence agencies concluded past year that the Russian government interfered in the 2016 election campaign and sought to tilt the vote in Trump's favor, something Moscow has long denied.

Do you know the difference between the words "would" and "wouldn't?" No?

Republicans, Democrats and diplomats of all stripes have said Trump's comments were disgraceful.

Republican Senator Rand Paul has given a series of interviews supporting Trump's stance towards Putin and berating his critics as biased.

"While I had a great meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, raising vast amounts of money, I had an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russian Federation".

Senate Intelligence Vice Chairman Mark Warner applauded the GOP members who expressed concern over Trump's remarks, saying more Republicans have spoken out now compared to previous Trump controversies.

Trump still believes the criticism is being blown out of proportion, one official said, and he plans to try to turn the attacks onto the press once again.

U.S. President Donald Trump listens during a cabinet meeting at the White House in Washington, U.S., July 18, 2018.

"While the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels was an acknowledged triumph, with billions of dollars more being put up by member countries at a faster pace, the meeting with Russian Federation may prove to be, in the long run, an even greater success, Trump said".

"We stand by our North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies and all those countries who are facing Russian aggression", Ryan said. "Vladimir Putin does not share our interests, Vladimir Putin does not share our values".
