Portsmouth residents warned to ‘stay out of sun’ as Met Office issues heatwave alert

SCOTLAND is on track for one of its driest summers for 108 years - as an African roast blows north to deliver a sizzle pushing 27C (80F) this week.

"With hot air over the United Kingdom some scattered thunderstorms may form over parts of central and eastern England on Thursday afternoon", said the Met Office.

The mercury is set to hit 35C on Thursday and rise further to 37C on Friday, triggering a thunderstorm warning into the afternoon.

There is the potential for thunderstorms to develop during this afternoon, lasting well into the evening and perhaps developing into a larger area of rain.

The yellow warning for thunderstorms is in place until 2am on Saturday and covers London and the East of England.

"Large hail and strong, gusty winds are also likely and combined could lead to hard driving conditions as a result of spray and sudden flooding", Mr Ramsdale said.

Essex Police said the search for a teenager who was last seen in water near Clacton Pier on Thursday evening resumed on Friday morning.

May takes personal charge of UK's Brexit negotiations
Several sources in Brussels and elsewhere reported back to Dublin the UK's tactics of separating member states from Ireland. Raab said: "Well, I think that's a rather irresponsible thing to be coming from the other side".

With potentially record-breaking high temperatures in the coming days, the Government is being warned it must do more to protect vulnerable people in extreme heat.

Overnight temperatures almost everywhere will at least be in the high teens, with thundery showers affecting parts of the Midlands and North East England in the early hours.

In the capital, London Fire Brigade called for a temporary ban on barbecues in public parks after a spate of grass fires, while Highways England demanded drivers refrain from throwing rubbish from their vehicles following a surge in fires by busy roads.

On Saturday, any thunderstorms are expected to clear away, though there may be some showers, with much cooler temperatures of 23C to 26C likely.

"Still quite warm, but for some, especially across the east, temperatures could easily be ten or more degrees lower on Saturday compared to Friday".

"And that has the impact of ousting the really hot and humid air.it turns runs cooler for the weekend, fresher, more comfortable at night".
