American diplomats met face-to-face with Taliban last week

Hamdullah Mohib, the Afghan ambassador to the United States, disputed that US and Afghan forces were leaving rural areas and essentially surrendering them to the Taliban.

A Taliban official says a meeting between the militant group and a senior United States diplomat to discuss a possible ceasefire ended with very positive signals.

Earlier media reported about the meeting of the us delegation, headed by the Director of the Department of state for South Asia, Alice wells and representatives of the Taliban.

The insurgent official, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained the "preliminary" dialogue focused merely on "laying the groundwork for future contacts and meetings" between the Taliban and the U.S.

The Taliban have long demanded direct talks with Washington, saying they do not want to talk politics with the USA but instead meet face to face to discuss Washington's concerns - particularly its security concerns - about the Taliban and Taliban involvement in Afghanistan's future.

One of the members of the delegation in an interview with the source DW reported that the last hotel Doha meeting did not look like peace, but the parties failed "in a friendly atmosphere" to agree to a cease fire.

It wasn't clear when the next meeting would be held or with whom, but the Taleban official who spoke to The AP was certain one would be held.

The withdrawal resembles strategies embraced by both the Bush and Obama administrations that have started and stuttered over the almost 17-year war, the Times said, adding, that it will effectively ensure that the Taliban and other insurgent groups will hold on to territory that they have already seized, leaving the government in Kabul to safeguard the capital and cities such as Kandahar, Kunduz, Mazar-i-Sharif and Jalalabad.

She must now wait until 2020 for the marriage to end on the grounds that they will have been separated for five years. He said the "question for Parliament" was whether the law governing "entitlement to divorce" remained "satisfactory".

Last week, State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert confirmed that Ms Wells was in Qatar last week where she met the deputy prime minister and other Qatari officials to "talk about their contributions to the situation in Afghanistan".

They also say they want a time frame for the withdrawal of the roughly 15,000 USA and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation troops still in Afghanistan.

The retreat to the cities is a searing acknowledgment that the US -installed government in Afghanistan remains unable to lead and protect the country's sprawling rural population.

News of the meeting follows a directive from the Trump administration for United States diplomats to talk directly with the Afghan militant group.

British ambassador to Afghanistan Sir Nicholas Kay said on Sunday the British government supports all efforts to get the Taliban to the negotiation tables.

Back in February, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani called on the Taliban to join peace talks "without preconditions". They also destroyed 15 militants' command and control posts and 352 bunkers in different places over the period, according to official figures.

His release was eventually secured in May 2014 in exchange for the five Taliban prisoners, who are living in Doha.
