Know How to Check Names in National Register of Citizens

The second and final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC) was released today.

Sailesh, the registrar general and census commissioner of India, said those excluded from the list would not be deported from the country and would have a chance to file an appeal.

"Although we have been told that we can apply once again to get our names enlisted in the citizenship list, we are anxious about our future", said Nur Banu, a 45-year-old woman from the Darrang district, whose family of six was missing from the list. In February 1983, 2,000 immigrant Muslims were slaughtered in one night by machete-armed mobs in a brutal massacre in Nellie.

"Muslims didn't come to India due to religious persecution, and the citizenship is only a proposal, it would be wrong to link it with the NRC", Mr Sarma said.

"The NRC [National Register of Citizens] is trying to finish us off".

"If the government has chose to brand us foreigners what can we do?" said Abdul Suban, 60, a Bengali-speaking Muslim, earlier. "Our people have died here, but we will not leave this place". He said he was devastated to see families separated and people kept in "jails" indefinitely, some of them over many years.

Authorities were trying to evacuate inhabitants, Tzanakopoulos said early Tuesday, while searches for further victims continued. Fires have also raged for five days in Latvia, destroying more than 800 hectares in the Baltic state's western regions.

Existence of name in the legacy data: The legacy data is the collective list of the NRC data of 1951 and the electoral rolls up to midnight of 24 March 1971.

The list has included descendants of those whose names were in the 1951 list and also those who were voters in Assam till March 24, 1971.

Azmal Haque, 50, a resident of Chaygaon in Assam's Kamrup district, said his name was omitted despite submitting all "valid documents".

Hundreds of thousands fled to India from Bangladesh during its 1971 war of independence from Pakistan. They settled in Assam, which borders the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan to the north and Bangladesh to the south and is home to several rebel groups. So many Muslims are there, Bengalis are there, Biharis are there... The state is still holding the central forces and they plan to continue that until the entire process is not completed. Muslims form one-third of state's population. In parliament on Monday Singh told MPs that there would be no deportations based on the register and said there was no need to create "unnecessary panic".

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said he had requested Home Minister Rajnath Singh to respond to queries on the National Register of Citizens, but the legislators continued to disrupt proceedings.

Critics say the move to strip the citizenship of Bengali origin people, most of whom are Muslims, is similar to Myanmar's removal of rights and protections for its Rohingya community. People who lack knowledge will be provided assistance.
