The Magpies have agreed a deal to sign Japanese striker Yoshinori Muto from Mainz for a fee of £9.5m, subject to a work permit.

Newcastle striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is close to completing a move to newly-promoted Fulham in a £22M deal which could rise to £27M.

The 23-year-old, who represented his nation in the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer, spent a fruitful loan spell there at the tailend of last season, scoring 12 goals in just 17 games as they earned promotion via the playoffs.

Muto's reported transfer represents Newcastle's biggest purchase of the summer, and follows the arrival of Swiss global Fabian Schär from Deportivo La Coruna earlier in the week.

Mitrovic spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham - scoring 12 times in 17 Championship appearances as the Cottagers gained promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.

"So, hopefully we can bring someone to replace him, quickly".

Nevertheless, the allure of Premier League football could come as a tempting prospect for Fernandez, with the Magpies keen to continue their summer business before the window slams shut in under two weeks.

Newcastle fans could be set for a very nervous few days if reports are to be believed, as The Sun states Leicester City are eyeing a swoop for captain Jamaal Lascelles amidst Manchester United's interest in World Cup icon Harry Maguire.
