The FETO and its US -based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup attempt of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and almost 2,200 injured.

The pastor, who has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years, faces as many as 35 years in jail if found guilty.

"Of course you can't expect all issues to be resolved in a single meeting", he said.

Asked if the issue threatened Turkey's membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Pompeo said: "Turkey is a NATO partner with whom the United States has every intention to continue to work with cooperatively".

Brunson, who was arrested in 2016 and is now under house arrest pending trial, denies the allegations.

"The decision, which disrespectfully intervenes in our judicial system, will seriously damage the constructive efforts made in order to resolve problems between the two countries", Ankara's foreign ministry said. We are now at a better point than yesterday with the US. "They argue then make up", Albayrak said, adding: "Relations will never break off".

Meeting with his Turkish counterpart on Friday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared that "the clock had run out" on Turkey to meet USA demands to release an American pastor detained since 2016.

The move is created to put the Turks on notice that the "clock had run out" and that it was time for Pastor Brunson to be returned home, Pompeo said.

"Brunson needs to come home, as do all the Americans being held by the Turkish government", Pompeo told the press prior to his side meeting with the foreign minister at a Southeast Asian security conference. The attorney general heads the Justice Department in the United States.

"The Turks were on notice that the clock had run and it was time for Pastor Brunson to be returned and I hope they'll see this for what it is, a demonstration that we're very serious", Pompeo said.

Washington and Ankara are also at odds over the Syrian war, Turkey's plan to buy missile defences from Russian Federation and the USA conviction of a Turkish state bank executive on Iran sanctions-busting charges this year. "These are innocent people", he said.

Some analysts have argued Turkey is wary of allowing any further escalation in the crisis, which has already sent the lira to record lows in value against the dollar of above 5 for the first time. "We call on the USA administration to walk back from this wrong decision", it said in a statement on Wednesday.
