At least 82 killed by 7.0 quake in Indonesia's Lombok, Bali islands

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake Sunday evening had a magnitude of 7.0 and its epicenter was about 2 kilometers (1 mile) east-southeast of Loloan, with a depth of 10.5 kilometers (6 miles).

The death toll is expected to rise with hundreds injured and thousands of houses damaged, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said in a statement on Monday.

Some areas still hadn't been reached, with rescuers hampered by collapsed bridges, electricity blackouts and damaged roads blocked with debris.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta is working to get more information following today's natural disaster on the island.

"Many injured people are being treated outside of hospitals and health clinics because the buildings were damaged", Nugroho said.

Several amateur videos of the natural disaster show people running in panic from houses and building shaking violently due to its intensity.

"The lower floors we went down there was more damage visible [there] than at the top [floors]".

A tsunami warning was lifted after waves just 15 centimeters (6 inches) high were recorded in three villages, said Dwikorita Karnawati, the head of Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.

Saffron Amis, a British student visiting the Gili Islands off the northwest coast of Lombok, told Reuters by text message that dozens of tourists were evacuated to a hill after the quake. Sutopo said there were no fatalities among the local and foreign holidaymakers.

The cabinet minister is in Indonesia for a regional counter-terrorism conference with a delegation from Australian, including the Australian Federal Police commissioner.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was on the 10th floor of a hotel in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his room shook violently and walls cracked.

Bali's global airport suffered damage to its terminal but the runway was unaffected and operations had returned to normal, disaster agency officials said.

The Malaysian embassy says those in Lombok as well as students in Bali are safe following the quake which hit yesterday evening. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
