Russia Appoints Actor Steven Seagal as Humanitarian Envoy to U.S.

The US martial artist and action movie star says he takes his appointment as Russia's special envoy to US'very seriously

He's a close friend and staunch supporter of Putin, whom he has hailed as a "great world leader".

While the 66-year-old star of '90s martial arts flicks like Under Siege and Hard to Kill might come across as an odd choice, Seagal has been courted by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past few years.

As for the choice of Steven Seagal to be the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative to improve United States and Russian relations, that seems a bit puzzling.

The Russian foreign ministry announced the move on its Facebook page, saying Seagal's portfolio would be to "facilitate relations between Russia and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges".

Seagal, who occasionally appears on Russian state television, said he welcomed the appointment, Reuters reported. "As for worldwide practice, you can draw a parallel with the functions of United Nations Goodwill Ambassadors".

He has previously hung out with Russia's Putin, a fellow martial arts fan. 'I have worked tirelessly in this direction for many years unofficially and I am now very grateful for the opportunity to do the same thing officially'.

Remains from North Korea 'consistent with being Americans'
The agency has DNA samples from 92 percent of the families of the almost 7,700 Americans still missing from the Korean War. Still, the initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", Byrd said.

It is the latest honour Russian Federation has bestowed upon Seagal.

CNN has reached out Seagal's spokesperson for comment. Back in 2013, Seagal was Putin's choice to lead a special diplomatic envoy.

As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least.

Actor Steven Seagal on Sunday embraced his new role as a "special representative" of the Russian Foreign Ministry, saying he takes the role "very seriously".

In a video of the event, Putin and Seagal shake hands.

In response to the notably unpaid engagement, Seagal said he was "deeply humbled and honoured" on Twitter.
