"Tragedies bring people together", he added. Workers who live in Yosemite's popular Valley region were ordered to leave Friday because of inaccessible roads.

Firefighters from 16 states have rushed to California, and authorities were reinforcing 3,232 personnel on the Mendocino Complex Fire, which is made up of two blazes.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for critical fire weather conditions Friday and Saturday as a series of dry low-pressure systems pass through the region, bringing gusts up to 35 miles per hour (56 kph) in the afternoon.

The Mendocino Complex fires cover an area 71 percent of the size of Los Angeles. The other, the River Fire, has burned nearly 48,000 acres in Lake and Mendocino counties.

However, most evacuations were lifted by Saturday in and around Redding, where armies of firefighters and fleets of aircraft continue battling an huge blaze about 100 miles south of the OR line. It has so far killed a firefighter, bulldozer operator, and a grandmother with her two grandchildren, and two others.

High temperatures, low humidity and afternoon winds along with low fuel moistures are aiding large fire growth, officials said.

Numerous evacuation orders and warnings remain in place for Lake, Colusa and Mendocino counties. They have grown to nearly 250 square miles (648 kilometers).

To the southwest, new evacuations were ordered late Thursday at the Mendocino Complex, where the so-called Ranch and River fires have ravaged a combined 240 square miles (621 square kilometers), destroyed 41 residences and threatened 9,200 homes.

"I can remember a couple of years ago when we saw 10 to 12,000 firefighters in the states of California, Oregon and Washington and never the 14,000 we see now", he said. Some areas on the fire's southeastern flank were reopened to residents.

It burned so furiously on July 26 that it created what is called a fire whirl.

"In past decades, we may have seen a fire that we're seeing now (such as the Carr Fire), in August or September", CalFire Director Ken Pimlott said during a press conference earlier this week.
