Yemen air strikes kill dozens, including children on a bus

At least 29 children died and 30 children were injured in a Saudi coalition airstrike in Yemen, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said it was sending supplies to ICRC-supported hospitals to support an influx of casualties.

"Following an attack this morning on a bus driving children in Dahyan market, northern Saada, [an ICRC-supported] hospital has received dozens of dead and wounded", the ICRC said on Twitter without giving more details.

He added that this operation was "implemented in accordance with global humanitarian law and customary rules".

Geert Cappelaere, the UN Children's Fund regional director in the Middle East and North Africa, said the children were "reportedly under the age of 15".

The missile was sacked from the rebel-held Yemeni province of Amran towards Jizan, the coalition said.

The previous evening, Saudi Arabia intercepted a ballistic missile fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels, but shrapnel killed a Yemeni man and wounded 11 others in the southern Saudi city of Jazan.

According to Al Jazeera, the Saudi coalition claimed it had targeted "missile launchers", but Yemen-based reporters who have witnessed numerous attacks in civilian-populated areas vigorously disputed the claim.

Air strikes by the Saudi-led coalition have killed hundreds of civilians at hospitals, schools and markets.

Alarmed by the rise of a group they saw as an Iranian proxy, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and seven other Arab states intervened in an attempt to restore the government.

It's not the first time the coalition has hit a residential area this month.

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), an outspoken critic of the United States' support for the Saudi coalition, expressed fury over the attack and demanded once again that lawmakers end their complicity in the war. It went on to accuse Houthi rebels of using children as human shields.

Video from Houthi run Al-Masirah TV appears to show several children who lost limbs in the attack.

Coalition spokesman Turki al-Malki even claimed that the strikes "conformed to worldwide and humanitarian laws".

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, Ambassador of Yemen to the US and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, reportedly said Iran was able to increase "its military and financial support for the Houthi rebels in Yemen" following the implementation of the JCPOA under former President Barack Obama.

The Iran-aligned Houthis regularly fire into Saudi Arabia and have targeted its capital, Riyadh, with ballistic missiles.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

Yemen's war has left almost 10,000 people dead since 2015 and unleashed what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

After today's strike, Lise Grande, United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, urged all parties to come to the table.
