Meteor shower lights up skies over Bosnia

The meteor shower's peak will be visible late Sunday night into early Monday morning. An average 60 meteors per hour are expected to streak across the sky, a spectacle that will be enhanced this year by a darkened crescent moon.

"I think that everybody should see this", said Miralem Mehic, a Bosnian from an global group of star gazers who watched the light show at the Sand Pyramids - an area of naturally occurring sand columns - near the town of Foca.

The shower has its origin in a comet called Swift-Tuttle. The meteoroids become handsome meteors or shooting stars when they enter the earth's atmosphere and burn up due to the friction caused. The last time it passed nearby was in 1992. The next time the comet passes by Earth will be in 2126. The meteor shower seems to originate in the constellation named Perseus (from the tip of its imagined sword) and was therefore named Perseids.

Partial solar eclipse to take place Saturday, unseen in Arab world
Viewers of solar eclipses are advised to never look directly at the Sun, and either wear specialised glasses or viewing boxes. The next partial solar eclipse will occur on January 6, 2019, which will peak across the North Pacific and Northeast Asia.

Comet: A comet is a relatively small body that orbits the sun. As the rock falls toward Earth, the air rushing against the rock heats it, creating a glowing hot trail of air as the rock zips through the atmosphere. The darker the sky, the better the view. Although the exposure was timed to catch a Perseids meteor, the orientation of the imaged streak seems a better match to a meteor from the Southern Delta Aquariids, a meteor shower that peaked a few weeks earlier.
