Justice Department official Bruce Ohr arrives for a closed hearing of the House Judiciary and House Oversight committees on Capitol Hill in Washington. A former British spy told Ohr a senior Justice Department lawyer

A senior Justice Department lawyer says a former British spy told him at a breakfast meeting two years ago that Russian intelligence believed it had Donald Trump "over a barrel", according to multiple people familiar with the encounter.

Trump has recently begun targeting Ohr, urging that he be removed from the Justice Department.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden said on CNN tonight he has heard nothing but good things about DOJ official Bruce Ohr, one of the men at the center of another Russian Federation controversy.

Between 2014 and 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department sought and attempted to turn Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska into an informant for the United States, the Times reported Saturday. At the time of the 2016 presidential election, he was a high-ranking official in the deputy attorney general's office.

Ohr heard the claim from Christopher Steele, the author of the famous Trump-Russia dossier, who was citing a former Russian intelligence official, according to the report.

The President and some House Republicans who are vocal critics of the Russian Federation investigation have also seized on Ohr and Steele's connection as proof of an untoward association between government officials and the roots of the special counsel's investigation.

Ohr, a 30-year Justice Department veteran, is being scrutinized for his meetings with Steele, the former British intelligence officer who compiled an infamous dossier on Trump and Russian Federation, and Glenn Simpson, the founder of Fusion GPS, the firm that hired Steele to do research on Trump.

Another Republican point of protest is that Ohr's wife, Nellie Ohr, had worked as a subcontractor for Fusion. But the investigation was opened because of conversations involving former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, and not the dossier, FBI and congressional officials have said.

The people who discussed Ohr's interview spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the closed session.
