Woodward Book Is 'Fiction' Meant To 'Interfere' In Kavanaugh Hearing

President Trump suggested politicians should change the libel laws as he denied Bob Woodward’s claims

President Trump suggested politicians should change the libel laws as he denied Bob Woodward’s claims

The White House has long denied that it sought out options for what the media has called a "bloody nose", or limited, strike on North Korea. At a National Security Council meeting on January 19, the president questioned why the government was spending resources in the region at all.

The book says the US President's former economic adviser, Gary Cohn, removed a letter about a trade agreement with South Korea because he thought it was a threat to national security.

Trump sent that statement around his Twitter feed, along with another from Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

The president's tweet was part an aggressive effort by the White House to discredit Woodward's forthcoming book, Fear, which paints a harrowing portrait of the Trump presidency, based on in-depth interviews with administration officials and others.

The book says chief of staff John Kelly had doubts about Mr Trump's mental faculties, and declared during one meeting, "we're in Crazytown".

The account explains Chief of Staff John Kelly, after arguing with the president, said, "He's an idiot".

When another aide drew up an order to withdraw the U.S. from the North American Free Trade Agreement with Mexico and Canada, Mr Cohn reportedly said: "I can stop this".

Trump did not speak to Woodward until after the book's manuscript was completed. The lawyers then go to Mueller, relate their woes with their client, and essentially tell him, in the words of Vanity Fair magazine, that he is too dumb to testify.

"It's just nasty stuff", Trump said. Trump told Woodward he wasn't informed of the interview requests, before acknowledging that one of Woodward's intermediaries, South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, had mentioned it to him.

Underscoring the aggressive response, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted Wednesday that Woodward "got played", adding that "most of these stories are made up from low confidence under performing people that have fallen flat on their faces because they didn't have the talent or intelligence to be successful".

Dowd said he would not address every "inaccurate statement" attributed to him but did deny that he had called Trump a liar or that he would end up in an orange jumpsuit.

In this latest expose, it appears that Woodward confirms many Americans' worst fear; that at a critical time in their history, they have elected the most unqualified and incompetent president in recent history.

"[Trump] would make fun of her voice", a person who worked on the show's set said to The Beast.

According to Woodward's reporting, Trump stumbles and contradicts himself during the exercise and Dowd is convinced that Trump should never sit down with Justice Department investigators. Trump asks in the call. "I am into fiction like General Mattis, so maybe I'll take a look at this one".

Mr Trump tells Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross he does not trust him, saying: "I don't want you doing any more negotiations". I said NEITHER, never used those terms on anyone, including Jeff, and being a southerner is a GREAT thing.

- John Dowd, who served as Trump's personal lawyer for matters related to special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation until March, when he resigned, was so concerned that Trump would perjure himself if he submitted to an interview with Mueller's team that he put together a mock question-and-answer sessions with Trump to prove his case.

"There is no federal libel law for President Trump to bully Congress to change, and the president does not have the authority to change state libel laws", Hauss said. Wolff's book attracted attention with its lively anecdotes but suffered from numerous factual inaccuracies. It's titillating to hear that Priebus dubbed the presidential bedroom "the devil's workshop" because of all the tweeting Trump does from there, but we already knew the president does that, too.

Graham said his only interaction with Bannon, who left the White House in August of a year ago, was to discuss his proposed replacement for the Affordable Care Act, co-sponsored with U.S. Sen. Some White House officials expressed surprise at the number of erstwhile Trump loyalists willing to offer embarrassing stories of the president and his inner circle.

The result was that they could only start pushing back hours after the story first broke, releasing a slew of statements from figures quoted indirectly by the book.

Woodward does not name his sources.

Former George W. Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer defended Woodward's methodology.

"It's just another bad book".

And at another: "I think we could be so rich if we weren't so stupid".

"Anonymous sources have looser lips and may take liberties". But Woodward always plays it straight.
